where do you stand, brother? did the slaves come here on ships? were they slaves or masters? who were, we who are we?
I cant really give a in depth opinion, i havent had a African History class in five years so my knowledge on the topic is very limited. But i do recall black people owning slaves which is a shocker but is a harsh reality that needs to be faced. We were brought on ships by force and if it were by both slave masters and other slaves i cant really remember if it were both or not. However i can give my opinion on who we are, and that is a group of people taken from our motherland and placed on the other side of the planet where we have limited connections to the place were we originate from.

This is ridiculous and has been debunked many times. Check Michael Gomez's Exchanging our Country's Marks which traces the earliest African origins on North American soil.

I'm making a list of books to give my mother this upcoming Xmas due to the fact that she can be real ignorant about African American history sometimes and is only familiar with Caribbean history and European history....the latter she learned mainly cause she was in the Jamaica school system and basically colonized ...

You have mentioned the exchanging country marks book a dozen times already that i've lost track so I got that in the list....and it will help cause she is ignorant about that part of history in terms of slavery.....

I'm also gonna put the "Assata: An Autobiography" so she cal learn about great leaders in the history and especially a great woman ....reading it before or after the Common autobiography "One Day It Will ALL Make Sense" would also go hand in hand together and not just cause Common talks about Assata....

These are the three I have in mind.....if you were me and you wanted to wake up someone who has said crazy things like "African americans always complain about what they went through and they went through nothing...its mainly their ancestors that did" or "alot of them live in public housing their entire life and dont' save and only complain" or my favorite " The Irish and Jewish went through a much harder time and they don't complain" "I don't complain about jews they are nice and respectful to me and pay me well....plus the bible says the Jews are the blessed people so what can you do you can't change the bible"....

It gets worse than that :beli: I know I can't rush this but she gotta change now.... :snoop:

So can you give me your list of 10 works you would wrap up in a christmas gift and give her if you were in my shoes......Exchanging Our Country Marks(I've read numerous amazon reviews and reviews on other sites) is so critically acclaimed that the book by itself should cover the theme of what our professions were before we came here ....I may add in "Murder at Montepelier" which I know @Marvel mentioned.....

But I would use the remainder of the list to pick some works that could teach her about African American History

Moors were in America before the white man and that's why we don't have to pay taxes. It's true. You won't spend time in prison if you try to use this argument in court.

Morrocco was the first country to recognize America and also fought wars with America.
I would imagine it's possible that the original man, the Moor, brought the whites to America but in an experiment the roles became reversed and was unable to be fixed until the motherwheel revolves counter clockwise on it's y axis for a yet to be determined number of years

This is def a possibility as Whites were originally the first slaves to be transported everywhere especially the females.

The realest slave movie to this day...
there was another one made much worst than this and was also filmed in haiti also..by italians..it was disgusting and savage. but shyt got shelved and burned..
let me do some research and get the title..there were seminars back in the day that showed it but was to be never seen again..a collector bought the film print..
they said it makes goodbye uncle tom look like Roots.

What is wrong with people here?
Why can't we act like adults?
I thought I could get a decent conversation in HL.

With all due respect my man, you can't come into someone else's domain (or anywhere for that matter), ask a multitude of questions and just expect people you don't know to give you full detailed breakdowns on a whim. You are asking questions that don't have a simple answer, if you want a detailed discussion, I'm sure you can get it but you shouldn't be dismissive of people attempting to help you.

You came into this thread asking questions you can easily research yourself, but probably don't want to put in the time and work to do so and that's fine but if that's the case, why would you get mad at something seeking to steer you in a direction that will give you the answers you seek? You dismissed a lot of the responses with a callous response and then seem to be playing victim when you received the same energy. Why?

This is true, but you are looking at it on a superficial level.

"technically" some black people owned slaves, but they didn't own them to use them as slaves. They were acquiring the rights to them so they could get them away from their oppressors and give them freedom. There are multiple instances and records of men buying their families and getting away to build lives with them. Technically the "owned" their family but functionally it was just a means to reclaim your family and build a life away from the oppression.
