It ain’t complex. The sound of music genres has changed as the years have gone by. Whether you like what artists are putting out today or not is entirely subjective. I do think it’s silly though to gate-keep what the sound of a genre should be when experimentation is constantly at play upon new releases.

This isn't good experimentation, objectively the music is devolving in the subjective realm of the genre, R&B, based on past achievements if that's how you feel. Good taste and bad taste even in a subjective arena like art still exists, this is why awards are given, why critics have jobs, and why aesthetics exists as a discipline.

Ill never forget a couple months ago when somebody recommended this song as an example of modern day R&B:



I checked it out expecting to hear amazing vocals , runs & adlibs over a sultry and soulful background.

But instead I got the opposite. An extremely pop sounding beat with some of the most soulless and amateur sounding vocals you'll ever hear.

Now, it's a cool song and I'm not shytting on the song itself but this is NOT R&B. FAAAAAR from it.

Every year for the past couple of years, old music has consistently outsold new music and old music is being streamed more than new music.

Even the youth know that what they make musically and what they want to consider is great is actually not that great.
