I consider African Americans, our experiences, and both our current and past circumstances to be unique... not sure how any serious comparison(s) with any people(s) anywhere can be made, but i'm all ears. Why do they have so many problems? and how exactly is it related/comparable to the African American situation?

Liberia began as an American colony of "repatriated" diasporic Blacks prior to the Civil War. In essense, Liberians began as African-Americans.
Despite their efforts, Liberia has been plagued with political corruption, disease, and multiple civil conflicts. (I don't attribute this to Liberians themselves.)
Many Blacks decided not to--or didn't have the opportunity to--join the colony, and elected to fight for their rights in the country of their birth. A decision I wholeheartedly applaud.
