I can always tell who didn't pay attention to Penny when they bring up his averages and say it wasn't anything impressive. Your eyes would tell you anything but. He is arguably the best inside scorer that has ever played the position, 57% from 2 is what he shot in his best campaign. That's mindblowing

Of course his volume would be relatively low playing next to Shaq, but what happened in '96 when Shaq got hurt and missed the first 22 games of the season?

-Penny drops 26/5/7 on 50% (62% TS) maintaining his efficiency while increasing his volume
-Magic have a top 5 offense WITHOUT Shaq
-Magic go 17-5

The great tragedy is that he was never able to follow up this season b/c of the injuries that would follow in '97. But for a short window in that postseason even despite all the ailments, he drops b2b 40 point games against the #1 ranked defense Miami Heat

and averages 31 for the series. There is no doubt in my mind he would've been an all time great with better health. On par with Kobe and Jordan? Probably not, but one of the greats nevertheless. There's no room for calling him overrated when most don't fully understand how good he actually was

He"d be on par with Kobe for sure. Kobe is more gifted offensively but his one drawback was his inefficiency. Penny on the otherhand was the most efficient dude at his position.

Dude made quick, snap and sharp decisions had great footwork and great touch and honestly speaking he was still developing. He was still a young player during his best years.

Penny was a superstar on the court.....See this is the problem, you think he's overrated because you don't understand how good he actually was. 1996 Penny Hardaway is one of the best PG's you will ever see in your life. MVP Derrick Rose? Not better than Penny that season.

Penny actually was in his prime already. We just don't know how much better he'd have gotten, but what he did in that span is impressive enough.

Grant Hill was NEVER the dominant scorer that LeBron was. That is what makes LeBron a GOAT level player and separates him from the likes of Scottie Pippen who's nowhere in that discussion. You can't be "LeBron before LeBron" when you were never a dominant scorer and had a spotty postseason resume at best.

I have Penny in my avatar because I appreciate his game. You clearly don't understand it
relax man:pachaha: I only said you're a fan of Penny

what makes you think I don't understand how good Penny was?

Penny was better than MVP Rose?

Rose regular season 25 ppg 7.7 apg 4 rpg
Playoffs 27 apg 7.7apg 4 rpg

Penny regular season 21.7 ppg 7.1 apg 4 rpg
playoffs 23 ppg 6 apg 4 rpg

People were comparing Lebron James to Grant Hill because of their similar style of play and strengths like what ALL comparisons are based on.

Because you're only looking at his numbers with no context which makes it clear that you don't understand that that there was nothing he couldn't do on a basketball court. His volume is depreciated because he played next to Shaquille O'Neal.

Consider this: In 1996 Shaq missed 22 games at the start of the season. What happened?

This is closer to how good he'd have been if healthy and the man of his own team

Penny did what Rose does best, finish in the paint, at a much higher level shooting 57% from 2 in 1996. He was a dominant post player with flawless footwork, counters, hooks, post fades, you name it every move in the book at his disposal against smaller guards who struggled to contain his 6'7 frame. He was an even better slasher and mid range shooter than Rose was. Your offense would have more success if led by the more skilled Hardaway than Rose, and that makes him better.

People were comparing Hill to LeBron because they thought he'd be as good even though he never showed that level of impact at the age of 27 years old whereas James was a prodigy very early in his career. He was never going to be a LeBron caliber player. Having similar strengths to James doesn't mean those strengths are remotely as good, and that's the problem with that comparison.

Only perimeter players I know with a better offensive arsenal than penny are Jordan and kobe. Offensive Skill set alone Penny was one of the goat scorers and he looked good doing it. Yea he didn't score a lot because he wasn't always agressive or selfish or in attack mode like MJ and kobe but Penny had more of a complete game with his ball handling and passing.

Penny just had a nice game and stats don't reveal how good he was/could've been you just had to see him play and understand the game of basketball as its played not advanced analytics.

Penny matches up with the all time greats if you compare him to forwards like Lebron, McGrady, Pierce and Pippen, 2 guards like kobe, Wade, and Jordan, or even pgs like magic, j Kidd etc.... Penny played all those positions well and dominated before even entering his prime. Just think about that.

I think the legend of Penny overrates him but his actual skill or game can't be overrated. If anything he's underrated because only players close to playing like him these days are Paul George and LeBron.
