Yeah, he wrote it. But he still had Rhymefest and Consquence helping him out during that era

Kanye knows how to make good music (pun intended) but as far as rapping goes, he's average at best. Even with all great music he's made, as a rapper, he's never been impressive to me. He ain't no Biggie, Nas, Jay, Face, etc etc

true, true, but i don't think ye's pen game is terrible. he's not as lyrically proficient or technical as the rappers you listed but he's great at being really vivid in songs, coming up with memorable verses, finding and changing his delivery to match the emotion in his songs, and tons of other things that make for a great song outside of just rapping really well on it.

To each his own. I'll just say this, the music that backs him is what gets him over IMO

I don't understand how Kanye can be considered average as a rapper. We're talking about someone who can ride any beat and do any kind of song.

Kanye West is responsible for classic and near classic albums. His music ushered in new eras in rap. Having a team isn't a strong enough parallel between he and Puffy to call him a 2.0. Puffy rides waves, Ye starts them.

Puff is also responsible for classics. He ushered in new eras of rap. In fact, the Shiny Suit era is called the Shiny Suit era because of Puff. In terms of wave riding, Kanye and Puff have both been guilty of riding waves.

I don't get why people act like being compared with Puff is negative. Puff's responsible for Biggie, Mase, Total, 112, Faith Evans, Carl Thomas, Black Rob, Shyne, and a host of other artists. He had a hand in the careers of Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. Some of The Neptunes first production credits were on Bad Boy albums. There's the remixes. Then you have classic albums like:

Biggie- Ready To Die
Biggie- Life After Death
Mary J. Blige- My Life

Because it implies Kanye isn't a great artist, which is so far from the truth. Kanye's discography >>>>>> 95% of rappers'

Heres puffy "making a beat"

There ya go. This is exactly what he does.

Knowing what goes where and how to make it sound a certain way is just as important, if not more, than actually pressing the buttons...

One doesn't happen without the other...

It doesn't imply that he isn't a great artist unless people don't think that highly of Puff. No Way Out era Puff Daddy was hyped to Heaven by the media. At that point in time and even now, people regarded Puff as a genius. I remember Puff being tapped as a co-producer/consultant on Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" tribute to Princess Diana because of the success of "I'll Be Missing You".

Because lyrically he subpar. He doesnt paint a picture, isnt really clever, doesnt use literary devices all to well alliteration/wordplay(etc) rarely has an insightful perspective on anything really. Yea he speaks on social issues and consumerism as modern day slavery, but its basic lyrics. On the boards and hooks i give him his due but in terms lyrics nope.
