I guess their argument would be that it's not exactly 50% since they still end up doing most of the chores/grocery shopping/cooking. They also get less space and control over their environment which can bring a certain stress/mental load. Plus no time to be alone at home, no complete control over who can or can't come over, always having to check if it's ok to entertain guests, etc...For some, the money they save in a 50/50 deal is not worth it where as if the deal was more like 80/20 they might consider it more.

Just think with what you could do with $1700. If you asked me, anybody under $150k should be splitting the bills.
