Ironically the only time I saw a black firefighter he was literally saving a kitten from a tree lmao. First time I ever saw that in real life...I thought it was just something made up in cartoons and shows.

I was considering it as well a few years back. I got selected to compete in the hiring process. I made it down to the final 5 candidates out of like 200, but I’m pretty sure they only selected who they did cause he used to be a running back at UGA

we had to do a series of physical and paper test. It was cool, but looking back I’m glad I stayed in the educational field. The pay isn’t as good but I don’t wake up everyday dreading going to work.

My late cousin who was my age was one for a bout 10 years, maybe more. Then he finished his degree and moved on. He was a great lost to the family. Most of his old firefighter co-workers came to his funeral, nearly the whole fire department, and they were mostly White. So I kind of see what the OP mean in that sense, since most of them are White.

I’m on Long Island and I see them in the Black towns. But even then, a few of the majority Black areas have some white firefighters.

Those black firefighters from Long Island were reppin hard in the AA day parade in Harlem a couple years ago.

I rarely ever see Black firefighters in NYC though, black firefighter upstate recently got killed in the line of duty

Set 5 of the top 7 times and scores for physical and written tests. We were all supposed to start in Jan then covid-19 pushed everything back and we haven't heard anything since. The chief hasn't responded to calls or emails. I keep hearing from current firefighters it's politics

OP is from NYC. Hes right the vast majority of firefighters here are italians and irish descendants. It's a "good ole boys club" here in NYC. Hard to break in if your "other" especially black.

My father retired from NYFD. We also knew a black captain. Lots of .

But mom makes a mean corned beef and cabbage.

I’m one. My EMT class it was 5 of us, my fire academy it was 11(3 females included that made it thru)

best job in the world. Plenty of off time, good paying, I can retire in my late 40s, you do see the worst of society though

You have to be in peak physical shape(to get thru an academy), drug free, clean record. Lot of black men cant say they have all 3 unfortunately.

My buddy is one...loves it...24 hours on 24 hours off... literally cooking, sleeping, talking shyt, watching games unless something happens...

and even then most don't actually "go into" fires especially 3,4,5 alarms one... most of their work is getting the hoses connected to the hydrate especially in winter cities, putting equipment on, climbing stairs..

and then going into a facility/home after the fire is out...

Dudes be paying each other $200-250 to cover shifts to go out on like a Friday or Saturday night, his badge has gotten us into plenty of sporting events, clubs, concerts, etc for free

My best friend is a firefighter out west. He makes good money. Has seen some shyt that’s got him on meds now. I couldn’t do the job

My boy was a firefighter/paramedic and his first month working as a paramedic he went to a call of a kid that got cut in half in an elevator. Dude said that fukked him up so bad he couldn't do it anymore. He said just seeing a little kid in a situation still gives him flash backs to this day and this was about 10 yrs ago.
