I'm sure LL was the bread and butter around that time.

Jay Z actually was.....he dropped The life and times of Shawn Carter vol 1 around the same time....

and it did 3 times the numbers that Redman album did

i think Red just let Lyor and Kevin liles gas him up...cause he always talked about trying to do a followup to Muddy Waters...

but Def Jam never cosigned for that to happen :manny:

Is that the new narrative? Def Jam kept being saved every year?

:lolbron: im starting to think so too...........

every def jam personality has thier "i saved def jam story"....LL....DMX....DAME DASH...IRV...

when in reality i hate to say this....but Russell said bottom line ..it was Lyor that kept def jam afloat...particularly when they lost that 50% stake to Polygram in 1992....lyor was involved in every "salvation moment" from warren g to jay z...to murder inc and beyond....

Meh, I'd still say LL followed by Foxy.

Im confused on how a label could have so many gold and platinum plaques running out of money every single year.

:mjlol: this is exactly when his career started declining....while Red and Jay released classic lps (muddy waters and life and times vol 1)

LL dropped the pitiful and barely platinum "Phenomenon" lp......only good thing about that lp was the posse cut featuring ..Meth..Red..Dmx and Canibus (4,3,2,1)

LL was no longer the def jam cash cow by this time in 1996 :camby:

come on cali...you're a businessman yourself...

one word OVERHEAD...... if you read THE BIG PAYBACK book and that other text DEF JAM INC. that was a common theme with def jam during the 90s...big budgets and uneccesary expenses

for every gold or platinum act they also yielded 3 or more acts that were total flops.......

like the Flatlinerz and your "favorite" South Central cartel ...just joking :lolbron:

actually it was Jay and X in 98 that saved Def Jam. Jay sold 5 million in the end and DMX debut did about 4. They were both big in 98 along with Red that had a platinum and gold album that year. And let''s not forget that big tour in 98 so it wasn't Jay Z alone. No way

we are talking about def jam in 1996 and 1997 dude........that is what redman was referring to...he claimed he saved the label in 96

jay was already releasing singles for the 97 debut of JAY-Z life and times of shawn carter which came prior to DMX's debut in 1998

Redman knew this was a pivotal time for Def Jam cause ever since 1994..def jam was fighting a hostile "takoever" from the major label Polygram for the bulk of the 90's prior to the buyout from UNIVERSAL in 1998 which breathed new life into the def jam imprint which also made Russell and Lyor very wealthy men...

wikpedia:
PolyGram era (1994–1998)[edit]
By 1992, despite recent multi-platinum selling releases from Public Enemy, and EPMD, Def Jam ran into severe financial troubles and was faced with folding. However, in 1994, PolyGram purchased Sony's 50% stake in Def Jam Recordings—subsequently bringing the label into its fold. Following PolyGram's purchase, Def Jam distributed the Violator Records-signed artist Warren G's Regulate... G Funk Era album, which went triple platinum and brought much-needed revenue to Def Jam through its distribution deal with Violator.[8]

PolyGram acquired an additional 10% in Def Jam Recordings in 1996, further strengthening its ownership of Def Jam. Shortly thereafter, Rush Associated Labels was renamed Def Jam Music Group. The label remained profitable as its veteran star LL Cool J released his successful album Mr. Smith in 1995. The label later signed Foxy Brown, whose debut album Ill Na Na became a platinum seller in 1997

oh hell no. Redman didn't save it in 97 and neither did Jay. The only thing that saved Def Jam was the Polygram's /Universal purchase. That's it. Jay Z wasn't that big in 97
