I see why these kids are not proficient in Math & Reading

I was watching a friend's child recently and the kid is in 5th grade but struggling to do math word problems, doesn't know multiplication or division and having problems with subtraction. Her mom is a single mother and works a lot but the kid's education is slipping because she isn't getting help she needs. No one checks her homework and the teacher doesn't really explain the concepts. She has a cellphone and uses youtube, so I told her to use it to learn these math concepts. I really hopes she uses it to learn.

There are many kids struggling with their academics because they aren't being monitored. I was one that had a hard time with high school math but I did just enough to pass. Looking back that is highly unacceptable and my mom should've been on my case instead of trusting me to do well. I needed more supervision to stay on top of my studies. It would've made a huge difference in my performance.

From my experience I learned what I should do with my own kids and I see how much of a positive difference it makes. I always check my kid's homework and help when needed. He's pretty good at math and an avid reader.

Don't let your kid slip through the cracks, no matter what is going on in your life!

Common core is also bullshyt. The way they teach the math (specifically) is completely different than how we learned in a lot of places.


I hate to be but technology and our dependence on it is going to really hinder the ability to think and process information in the next generations. Kids don’t really learn how to spell because of spell check and auto correct. Kids don’t “need” to learn math because the phone has a calculator. It’s not that learning how to spell specific words or doing specific math concepts really deeply matters, but as we rely on machines to process information for us at a higher scale, our own brains ability to process and synthesize information is going to decrease.

I've already mentioned that I have an Indian co-worker that makes his 7 year old daughter study 2-3 hours every day.

My niece is in that same grade and has the same problems..
She is constantly on YouTube tho...
Her mother gives no fuc until the grades comes in. Then she wants to yell...
If I have kids... they will be home schooled by their mother

That's what I'm saying breh. Schools are just shuffling these kids grade to grade. In my opinion learning must begin at home. I'm always in my kid's bag and checking on what he is being taught. I assign him homework of my own.

1. The parent or parents need to have a major interest in the child's education. If that concern isn't there it won't matter if both are home.

It makes me proud to see my 8 yr old reading every chance she gets. There are books everywhere in my house

This is critical. I did it with both of my kids. My son now reads to his younger sibling. My youngest pics out the book she wants read to her and tries to read along at age 2. My mom taught me how to read with the belt. I'm taking a different approach.

Choose wisely breh. Get to know the woman thoroughly before smashing raw. Have that child rearing conversation.

Math concepts can be taught to anyone I feel. Saying it's genetic is a cop out. There are many ways to learn and it's about using the right channel to reach the student. The one size fits all method doesn't work for everyone. It takes effort on behalf of the student as well.

Do any of you have kids?

The way they teach kids math and reading is 100% different from when I was in school.

For instance with sight words (beginning readers)
They taught us every sound a letter makes. Then would say today we are learning words with "at" in them
B + at. buh + at, bat
C + at cuh + at, cat
F + at
H + at
M+ at
N + at
P + at
R + at
S + at
V + at
Etc then words that end in "an"

Ban
Can
Fan
Man
Pan
Ran
Tan
Van..

Etc. They don't teach anything like that anymore.


As for math even with simple subtraction if we had

We know that you have to borrow from 3, or carry the one, thus making 11 - 5 = 6 and 2-2 =0. These new kids are not taught to borrow or carry.

They break stuff down like how many handfuls of 3 can you get out of 31 then subtract 8 handfuls of 3 then add 2 fingers and shyt.

Everyone I know is pretty clueless on helping kids in school and it isn't because they aren't trying or aren't involved. It's because as adults we are forced to learn the new way the kids are learning as the kids are learning them or face overloading the kids by teaching them alternative methods of reading and math from what they are doing in class. So when their math or reading is looking for the specific steps they are learning and they do it the way we teach them they get 'the steps" wrong and fail assignments.

I used pennies to help with counting with my oldest.

My youngest just got it verbally, different techniques, but you only discover that if you spend time attempting to teach them.
