The “musical classic” shyt is subjective bro. Your anecdotal examples of people being instantly turned into nas fans after hearing lost tapes isn’t a moving argument either. Again, where the evidence that lost tapes reached masses of people outside of nas’s core audience? There's impact classics and there's musical classics. I've seen people who weren't even Nas fans turn into Nas fans overnight with The Lost Tapes with my own eyes. And remember at the time The Lost Tapes released way more people were receptive of Nas' shyt based off the Nas/Jay Z beef. He just came off the high of winning that battle in NYC. Only thing that hurt it at first is that people didnt know what they was getting into when they copped and automatically assumed it was throwaway joints. But when people heard it nikkas instantly called the shyt fire. I remember talkin about it in the barbershop at the time. And if u wanna talk like this. We can say the same thing about Reasonable Doubt. shyt ain't an impact classic at all. It's a quality classic. It became a universal classic cause Jay made sure to shine that light on it. The Lost Tapes is classic Nas which is why people call it a classic. It's not a universal classic tho based on the way it was handled. For instance. If that was labeled Gods Son and not The Lost Tapes. There would be no argument.
The reasonable doubt analogy doesn’t work because RD was jay’s debut. You can’t say that it didn’t reach folk outside of jay’s core audience because he didn’t have one yet. Rd established jay’s core audience, one that has proven to be probably the most loyal in hip hop history. Rd is an “impact” classic. The impact over time is undeniable. That “it’s only classic cause jay told people to call it classic” talking point is just hate.
