Thats not the point though. Angie Martinez is more than just a radio personality now. Shes a figurehead to at least NYC culture. As far as NYC, anybody who lives here knows her voice and immediately thinks radio. you think of classic interviews and such shes had with 2Pac and Big, breaking big news of the culture, and her countless interviews with culture heavyweights on the radio at rush hour driving home.

I guarantee you listenership would fall dramatically if they just put a new buck on the angie martinez hour:camby:

Funk flex on a friday and sat night on the spins playing ill shyt. Or have some rappers come through and just freestyle and bullshyt for like an hour.

Again. NYC radio is a culture, and these people are not just people that push the button. Theyve become their own brand.

I'm sorry. I forgot Big and PAC were still here :stopitslime:

Its time for her and those LIKE her to ride out into the sunset. Thanks for the memories...but you gotta go.

In other cities, she'd LONG be gone. Definitely ATL she'd be out of that studio.

Don't rattle me with "culture" talk.

Culture evolves and in order to do so, it must be represented by those who are at the forefront of that culture.

When is she going to retire? She can't be 45 talkin' about new 18 year old artists she supposed "LOVES"

No one is buying that siht.

I see another problem with hip hop in general

elder heads aren't respected like in other music genres :patrice:
This ain't about respect though.

Funk Flex is 45
Cipha Sounds is 38
Angie is 43
Mr Cee is 47
Rosenberg is 34
Ebro is almost 40 I think

And thats not even all of Hot 97.

C'mon man

A lot of crews had movements, was on mixtapes and DVDs, but never was on the radio like that.

I feel a lot of the young rappers on the scene are not making powerful music, and the really good artists are not active enough.
Ya'll overstate the "importance" of older songs though.

You like them more because you knew them better, but new artists are doing just as much if not more. You can't discount that.

You sound like what nikkas used say a while back, hes 38 he shouldnt be rapping anymore. Hiphop is not just a 13-30 demographic anymore. Theres no age limit anymore when you got nikkas like Jay turning 53 and at the helm of the culture.

Hip hop no longer needs to cater to just teens anymore. Theres grown man rap ala LIG, and Keef for the 17 yr old knuckleheads.

At the end of the day, youre right, they do need some fresh blood in there to keep up with the new acts, But on the Angie tip breh we just goin have to agree to disagree. you need the oldheads there who been through it all to add legitimacy. and Angie Martinez/Funk Flex are legendary to NYC radio,

I'm talking about 2013 and 2014, though.

Also, I'm 30+ and can enjoy Tyler/Odd Future, any rapper from Philly (except Meek Mill), Nipsey, etc... Rich Homie Quan last tape was crazy. Talent is talent. Its hard to deny if you are a true fan of the art.

Jay Z is an artist. he MAKES music for these MCs to curate. Jay can do what Jay wants.

and grown man rap? Chill. They might as well start transitioning to the "oldies" version and let these older heads start to take root there.

And old heads don't add legitimacy IMO. They take away from the progress of the movement

Your nostalgia is clouding your judgment.

Hell, Hot 97 might have some of the oldest MCs I've ever seen in any market across the board. Normally you get older folks on morning radio, but otherwise you're WILDING.

when Mobb Deep came out did they sound commercial? How bout MOP? or Wu Tang? or Nas for that matter... nope they sounded like NY. Same way ASAP, Action, eXquire, Retchy P, Ave, FZ etc. sound NY...

the problem is there is such a thing as "sounding commercial" now, and there wasnt back then. NY has an amazing scene of up and commers that get no national press or attention. The few cat's that broke thru basically have nowhere to go "commercially" because they get no radio play in there town. I'm sure they have records that COULD be popular, but nikkas either don't have the payola to play it, or it's deemed not commercial. NY will never be Trap or Drill the sound and flow of the city is not for that. But they still can make records with a bounce or a message that people tap into. But if they arent exposed to there audience then it's a dead issue.

You're not a radio DJ though. And I don't think theres anything wrong with being 30+...but around 40 you need to be looking to make that transition move.

let me put it this way, there might be less payola if there were younger tastemakers at the door.

Nothing trumps that authenticity of being closely aligned to the movements you're supposed to be representing.

cosign big time.. nikka should not be 50 up at radio. i understand certain things are staples, but they've done no work to brand and build new personalities to cosign the MUSIC! Not just the dikkrider of the weak. Angie has never heard LiveLoveASAP, i guarantee that bytch prolly heard problems. But she knows every Jay album , thats a problem.

Who is hating?

Ebro and Rosenberg just did an interview with The Migos and Johnny cinco and spent half of it talking down on them about how they don't understand what they're saying.

SOME of us younger folks do.

Ebro is fukking almost 40 (probably older if I really check) and OF COURSE he doesn't understand it. Its not FOR him.

Migos is trash. They are and embarrassment to the human race and this is what happens when these dudes are raised by single mothers.
