p.s. @malbaker86 the fact that DeRozan has shot two game-winning threes in a row, when I was saying that he should've been taking them in SA, when nxggas were arguing that he shouldn't cause Pop said so, is the cherry on top, don't you think?

Let me ask you a simple question:

Were folks listening to my actual argument from the start, or were they uppin this thread whenever they could without any regards to context just to try and get a W over me?

all folks weren’t, hell EYE wasn’t, but in actuality, over time quite few of us Spurs fans in here had to step back and reevaluate and we came around to it.

This thread has devolved into trolling and bickering (frankly, like most Coliseum threads).

If the Spurs win, people bump the thread to poke fun at Gil.
If the Spurs lose, Gil bumps the thread to reiterate his point and troll the trollers.

The frustrating part of this is that nobody addresses the actual tendencies on the court. Right? To Gil's credit, he's outlined the issues that have plagued the Spurs for years now.
No one has countered with any specificity why they think Popovich is right to continue coaching the way he does. You can't just point to 1 result and act like it trumps the trends. We're not talking about Popovich's legacy. He's been fantastic. He might even have an argument for being the best coach of all time -- and probably of his era.
But the Spurs have been an outlier in terms of the way the game is played for 6 or 7 years now.

With DeRozan and LMA, the Spurs ranked near the bottom in pace, spacing and perimeter scoring; arguably the 3 areas of basketball that have changed the most in the last decade. They hung in the middle or bottom of the Western Conference standings in large part because of the raw skill that LMA and DeRozan had (and Kawhi, when he was there).

But it's also fair to say that there was a way to get more out of those veteran talents if the Spurs would have modified their strategy somewhat to keep pace with what was happening around the league.

LMA and DeRozan are gone now and having more success in more modern systems of play.
And the Spurs in 2021-22 have gently moved closer to this new era of the game. But it has not been enough.

Would the Spurs be title contenders if Steve Kerr or Erik Spoelstra was the coach? No. The Spurs have limitations in raw talent. So it's not entirely coaching. But Popovich today is not doing them any favors.
You could have a Ferrari but it isn't going anywhere if the person behind the wheel refuses to put the pedal to the floor.

It's not like just shooting more 3s is the answer. It's what the threat of those shots and the spacing does for your players. It gives them a better chance to take better shots.

This is what Gil is saying below:

His last season in Toronto - 3.6 threes per game
His time in SA (three seasons) - 0.7 threes per game
This season in Chicago - 2.2 threes game.

It was a shot he started working into his game when he was in Toronto, and then Pop/Spurs cut it right out. Over those three seasons that he was in SA, the Spurs' starting lineups had the worst spacing in the league (I've documented it in this thread), and that was because they attempted the fewest threes, as it wasn't a shot they prioritized like the rest of the league did. This 180 not only stunted his own growth in the process of expanding his range, but it shrunk the floor in the lineups he was in because there wasn't adequate enough spacing, which in turn, made it harder to get to his spots.

Now, this season he's playing in [starting] lineups which prioritize the shot, which is why he's starting to work it back into his game, and why there is proper spacing now to get to his spots, which comes as no surprise he's having one of his best seasons in a long time.

All of this shyt is what I've been saying throughout this thread and DeRozan's revival is one of many, many points that continues to prove me correct.

I mean honestly, petty bullshyt aside...
How can anyone argue against what Gil is saying here?
Quit being babies and acknowledge the reality.

He's right.

Stop tagging me please

All you’ve done in this thread is move the goalposts and you’re still doing it
I’ve moved the goalposts?

:usure:

Y’all muhfukkas moved the goalposts. None of you muh’fukkas bothered to listen to what I was saying from the start, all because y’all hate analytics (well, you hate whatever you think it is). I was proven right 100x over; old ass nxggas don’t want to acknowledge so because y’all are stuck in the past. Then y’all upped it after regular season wins as if it proved anything. You only post in this thread whenever they win (you’re ghost whenever they lose), when wins/loses, in a vacuum, we’re never the argument.

Run along you bytch ass nxgga.
