It CAN be done with $400, but $600 will get you a haswell based build that you can rock with and upgrade as time goes on.

$900-$1000 is what you need for very high end.

@mlk17 As @Ciggavelli said you want a Sager the cooling on a sager is great and for about 1300.00 you can get one with a 960m in it which is powerful as high end desktop gpu's, if that cost to much look into the Lenvo y50 its 1,000 which has a 860m, i7 and 16gb of ram, the 860m is a great card for mid/high settings in most games and looks great.

It's not hard to believe, I've done it plenty of times. You have to go used on some parts and the AMD FM2 platform

He can build himself a $350 desktop CPU that's upgradeable to a nice haswell CPU later on. I'm with a pentium G3258.

Are you trying to go all out on ultra, or are you fine with console levels (medium/high)? I feel like you gotta know what you're getting into first. I'm sure they can pick out some parts that will give you medium/high fine, but if you trying to do ultra 60fps, you gotta pay more. It's all what you want

Then you'll be fine spending $400-$600. I think @Liquid is right about the haswell though. It gives you a better upgrade path
