Of course the ATL
I swear I was about to make a thread pertaining to this earlier. In Atlanta black men are being phased out by not only gay black men but c00n black gay men. That fulfills their black quota, their gay agenda, and they don't have to watch their fukking mouths are effeminate black men.

I have two jobs and I'm surrounded by gays, tranny's, and wenches.

Nah. Some of us real ones still out here gettin money with none of the bolded in sight

How you gonna be black in Atlanta and complain about gettin money? SMH

When I realized I'm there for self and they're their representing their entity, I started figuring out how I can take interviews by the reins, play the game, and make things work for me. Coincidentally, out of the jobs/gigs I've had since i graduated college in 2012, I've only had to interview for 2 of them. My main thing is strive to keep getting opportunities without having to interview, or make the interview just a formality.

I've aced interviews and failed interviews horribly in my 4 year professional career. I'll tell yall 4 keys I learned from experience alone. How I failed is in parentheses
  • Tell em what they want to hear (Relate your skillset and previous experiences to the job description and skills needed)

  • Interview for the job (Don't get too goal oriented and tell them you want to be the director of operations one day, when you're interviewing for a sales job. Not only do some folks shyt on your aspirations, but they'll figure you won't be focused in that role.)

  • Write notes and be prepared for the generic questions (I wasn't prepared for a "how will you find leads?" question for an ad sales job, no lie brehs I froze up and said "Well I'd uh" 10x, put the phone on mute for like 1 minute, cussed myself out and still couldn't think of an answer, DONT BE LIKE ME) :snoop:

  • Interview THEM (If you're personable and a good talker, flip the tables and interview them, ask questions, hell try to make the interview about something other than the job, it'll help you ease up too)

Buy loads of cigarettes on an Indian reservation and resell them in New York.

Breh you might as well sell dope. My uncle up in the Chi got years in the pen for selling cigs without the stamps on them. He used to run multiple trap houses for years back in the day and never got jammed up. Had workers doing the 8 hour shifts and all that. Caught himself getting out the game and started moving truck loads of cigs up from down this way and he got pinched in less than a year. shyt isn't a game out here. You better find your niche and carve that bytch out quick

:stopitslime: Where did I complain about getting money in that post? I clearly said I have two jobs and both pay decent wages. Breh, I'm the only dude that keeps it real about Atlanta on The Coli and if you work a corporate job in Atlanta, you're a damned liar if you say you don't work with an abnormal amount of homos.

Never sit for interviews too long. If you suspect they are quizzing you for eons about bullshyt, it's time to politely excuse yourself and thank them for the opportunity. Time is money.

Felt alone for a second with this type of thing until I came across this thread :obama:

I'm currently going through the same shyt when it comes to the rat race of job hunting.

Like folks said....it's sad as fuk but u have to be fake and personable to get a lot of these jobs. Plus with marketing and sales...u need to have decent to excellent social skills. Some jobs in a field like IT may not require folks with bubbly and extroverted personalities but marketing and sales pretty much do. I know dealing with the BS from folks especially cacs is a pain but u gotta deal with it.

Another thing that was mentioned...u gotta know how to play the game. Dealing with folks especially cacs is part of it. Us black men are heavily stereotyped. It's like we cant act super masculine because that can come off as hood or ghetto. We can't be too introverted and aloof because people will wonder what's going on with us. We can't look too urban...meaning no dreds, Rick Ross beards, no conspicuous tattoos, no gaudy or hood clothing even on dress down Friday, no excessive piercings, etc. We can't or I should say shouldn't look too threatening or hood then cacs will refer to us as an unsavory element. We gotta look the part and act the part. We gotta be sociable but not too sociable where we talking about non work related shyt during work hours all the time. It's all about balance and knowing how the game works and how to correctly play the game.

And last for OP..if they just interviewing u to fill a HR quota for number of interviews and have no intentions of hiring u because they already have an internal candidate lined up....FUK THEM! I hate that BS because people seriously need a job and they wasting folks time doing this. The only thing u can benefit from is interviewing experience and maybe a contact...but again it wastes ur time. Companies do this often.

I dealt with that quota bullshyt recently applying for the Assistant Manager position at the New Balance Flagship Store in San Francisco opening in July. I already work for the company at a franchise owned store as one, practically running the shyt .
Nearly a decade of sales and footwear experience .

I had a interview with them over the phone (which I hate, rather talk one on one in person) . Originally scheduled for early February but pushed back to the end of February because the woman interviewing me had to do some "recruiting" on the same date of my interview. Original time was at 10 AM. Rescheduled interview time was at noon . Got a autoemail a few days before saying it was at 10AM again. Contacted the interviewer by email to confirm my time was still at noon. She confirmed that it was.

Called me at 10:15 AM :martin:

The tone in her voice told me that they already had their person (most likely internally) and they were just doing protocol by going through the list of qualified candidates .

Applied for a supervisor position at a Nike Outlet I used to work at years ago and the rejection email I got from them said "despite being "blown away" by my resume and experience, they were going with someone else :what:.

Overqualified , I guess.

Even my current job interviewed me like "you're sure you wanna work here" ?

I need to finish my degree and become a shoe executive already :dame:

I remember I applied to work at zumiez in 2011.

Skateboarded for 20+ years at that point, knowledgeable in fashion and streetwear, knew every brand in that store. And to top it off i could even set up a complete skateboard in less than 15 minutes.

Didnt get a call back.

I go in there the next week and its filled with white people who legit had no clue of what anything was in the store. No knowledge of the brands. No knowledge of anything related to that store...and to top it off the had people that didnt know what they were doing. But cause they were white guess it was alright.
:mjpls:

Ive been in way too many situations where i was applying for work and knew too much and had too much drive and they were intimidated by it.

This is why at 31 im disgusted with the job market for black people...why i will never beg anyone foe a job again...and why i work for myself. I have no choice at this point. Like i just got sick and tired of "playing the game" and it ended up going nowhere and playing by their rules. fukk their rules. And their games. Ill make my own.

Sounds like my experience applying at REI :mjpls:

ATL Coli Brehs got 5 yrs to get their Credit and money right, if a group of us haven't popped off something together by then then this site is useless.

Agreed

Do marketing on the side. Create a basic
marketing plan/template and Cold call some companies with ideas on how you market for them. You get enough companies on board and it can turn full time easily.

It ain't that easy. You got to have a specialty.

Buy loads of cigarettes on an Indian reservation and resell them in New York.

You trying to get nikkas arrested and put in federal prison over inter-state tax evasion nikka? :mjlol: This shyt has been against the law since the nation was founded. Stop it.

Hmmm. I'm big and black, so not the cornball type at all. Maybe because I'm in Finance it's a different story. I don't tap dance. Most of my interviews they get straight to the point about the position. I never come off as a dikk, but I never was those kind of people that go over the top to get the job.

I think marketing and advertising you would have to be over zealous and corny af. It's just the industry. Especially if cacs are doing the interview. OP probably didn't talk about how he loved dogs and thought Adele is such a great singer. :mjlol:

Depends on the region. Maybe in Atlanta. But up here in NYC we serious. :francis:

I have plenty in common with a Jewish CAC I work with and it's not American Idol. :comeon: Mainly side business shyt, stocks, current events and talking about what we gonna do when we leave this company. NFL, straight male shyt. shyt that actually matters.

This is why you got to get in a technical niche within a field :blessed: fukk that creative gay shyt get quantitative nikka. Analytics, Attribution Modeling, etc.

I believe 60-70% of all available jobs aren't even publicly advertised. You have to know people to find out about them. And even among those that are advertised...in some cases that's just for show. The candidates in the "public queue" have no chance of being hired...the actual hiring takes place from a pool of "inside" candidates. Many times, a company already has an idea of a specific person they think is a good fit for a position before the job is officially opened.

Yeah for entry level pseudo "corporate" jobs like working customer service at Home Depot HQ or some shyt like that. But there are a good number of normal nikkas working skilled corporate jobs in the A. shyt these brothers went to school for and got specific skill sets for. The Morehouse/FAMU/Clark/ and other close by HBCU networks in the A are hella deep. I know a lot of cats that went to those schools and moved here and got jobs just off the strength of that. Didn't even know anybody. All they did was meet someone who was a fellow alumni and got on. On the other hand if you not in those networks a lot of times you will be on the outside looking in, and end up working on the lower floors of those buildings with a bunch of zesty ass negros walking around with that back arched all day. And this shyt really ain't unique to the A. Cacs everywhere hire like that. It's only in a handful of cities like here where you gonna see us in any meaningful numbers working white collar. If you want a desk job and don't want to be around gay people then go work some civic shyt like at COA or Dekalb. At the end of the day wtf do it matter tho? Go to work and get your money. fukk who you working with. Y'all nikkas be worried about the wrong thing.

With that said I do somewhat agree that if you got a slight edge to you then it's super hard to bust thru that ceiling. I speak from experience on that one. I'm not a thug but I got a slight edge that I can probably never get rid of. but I found it hard to network back when I was on the 9-5 grind. But that really ain't nobody fault but my own. Folks wasn't fukking with me. I actually made a concerted effort to make friends. Couldn't do it. nikkas was hating and some folks even knew some of the dudes I ran with off the fact Atlanta so small. Back when I was fukking up running with nikkas in the streets my mom told me I shouldn't be running with folks like that. She told me to get a better network and I didn't listen. I had no one to blame for myself when them folks at my old job was looking at me like I was a leper or some shyt

If you have a good reputation in the industry your name will be on the short list. Usually a head hunter will reach out directly.
