I'm a time when films aren't going to hit the theaters, how is WB going to make its money back? No ticket sales. They have to sell advertisement and product placement. So unless this movie was going to bank half a billion in theaters, putting this movie on HBO Max probably won't turn WB a profit... Movies are like albums. They have a songs that need to be cleared. Royalties need to be paid to actors. Marketing and advertisement that needs to be bought. So if another Friday is only projected to be low budget, with low return on investment, forget about it.

under my scenario cube takes on all the risk and wb gets a cut of the profits

which is highly unlikely, regardless

It does kinda make sense that Cube doesn't own the rights to Friday

It wasn't like he was a huge name in Hollywood back in 94-95

Doubt he owns the rights to the film.

My understanding is that he could have financed the first movie himself and was actually considering it. It only cost like $3mil, it was low budget. Cube was advised to let New Line (subsidiary of WB) do it, something about not putting your own money up. I'm kinda fuzzy on the detail but I remember hearing this. I think we have a better chance of seeing an 4th one if Cube owned it but you still got all these huge stars that signed on for peanuts because they were nobodies (in the mainstream) at the time.

That shyt looks trash just based on who you listed.

Just a soft reset for the younger generation...Chris was new and Pops was given a second wind. I think it could be cheaper and more lucrative...do you have any suggestions

The original cost 3.5. And that’s just production not marketing.

And with the original most of the main cast was getting around 5-15k. You couldn’t even get DC Young Fly for 15k, let alone the real actors you would want to bring back and who are still alive.

And it was the early 90s, so factor in inflation.

You couldn’t even make a “low budget” version of Friday for less than 15 million in 2021. 15-20 if you’re being generous.

No human being in their right mind would spend between 15-20 liquid of their own money on any movie.

So, you’d have to have investors, people who give you money for a percentage of the rights, backend and any deal you’d sign to sell it to a streamer etc.

Which then takes chunks out of the percentage of it that you own, but in this case he still wouldn’t own it because in your scenario WB is just giving him the rights to make the movie with none of their help and none of their money.

The scenario you are outlining it downright implausible and impossible.

I don’t care about the franchise anymore. Hope he gets it back though. I would also need to see what his plan is before I give a fukk. It’s been 20 years since the last movie and I would need to see some character progression. Have Cube play the Pops role now with his own family, and put over some younger black talent.
