A lot of people from Chicago back in the 90s were East Coast/NYC Hip-Hop fans. A lot of them didn't like West Coast rappers/music, it seems. Common didn't like Ice Cube either back then due to artistic reasons. Hell, Common felt more like an East Coast/NYC artist up until he released Be, I'm pretty sure there are others too.
