If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

Beyonce is a louder singer than Aaliyah and obviously sings in a different register but how is she better when Beyonce doesn't strike a nerve when I listen to her. I don't FEEL her singing. It doesn't evoke any type of motion. She just singing instead of SINGING.

Salute for that one mate, that's very much how I think a lot of people feel about beyonce. shouts rather than sings too much too, and as much as she generally seems a great peformer its all very mechanical.

Aaliyah was great, and her departure was a tragic loss, but to me, she wasn't better than Beyonce in any way.

As far as singing, there really isn't any contest. Just look at the following video of her singing Halo in a hospital with no studio assistance or backing track...

^If you don't FEEL that, I don't know what to tell you.

That's that shouting singing, it doesnt register with me at all. honestly that's actually horrible to my ears

Like dude said....Aaliyah came in the game rocking baggy clothes....well which females we all know was doing that first? it damn sure wasn't en vogue.....Mary wasn't doing that either. Even Beyonce and her crew were caught up in 1993 looking like TLC clones.

I never said Aaliyah was the only 1 doing this

bro..she has a strong, robust voice. Ofcourse, she's gonna be belting a lot in her songs..
chick shows restraint as well
That's like criticizing Whitney and Aretha for their powerful voices and associating it with things like "shouting" when their technique suggest otherwise..
Beyoncé's vocal ability is legit..like really legit. Doesn't matter if you don't like her voice or don't feel anything when she sings. The skill and execution speaks for itself.
I hate Patti's voice. It has the cold, piercing quality that fukks my ears up.. can't deny the woman can clear an auditorium with her instrument, though.

Saw her in Philly..
I'll never discredit her vocal ability ever again

She wasn't on the level with Brandy and Monica. She was popular when she died becuz she was doing promotion for her album so that made her highly visible, so thats how people now think her whole career was.

5 things Aaliyah was known for almost as much as her singing.

Marrying R. Kelly

Covering half her face with her hair and always wearing sunglasses becuz she was cock-eyed

Her dancing in the "Are You That Somebody" video

Her style of wearing baggy pants with sports bras

Looking good.

With a voice like this at her live shows, she wasn't gonna last long. Image could only take you so far.

Cough Cough Rhianna... plus although Aaliyah was inconsistent as a live performer, she also had performance where she sung well live.

Aaliyah was bigger musically than Brandy and Monica.

One, she had the R.Kelly cosign when he was coming off of 12 play ... first album 3 million plus.
One In A Million had 7 top 40 singles. Not to mention The Anastasia song....
We gonna stop there. We not even gonna touch 98-01

Not right now...

Maybe at a point after 2001, like the mid-2000s would've been the peak of her success. But she'd be 37 years old at this point, and probably already had her most popular album years ago. In 2016, there's only a couple of 20+ year careers still thriving. I don't think she would've been one of them.

No she'd be Monica/brandy/mya status in the music game. Maybe she would've carved a strong acting career, but like everyone from the 90's not named beyonce, she'd be well past her prime - musically.
This.... She was a good dancer, had her own style, and had some good hits, but keeping it real, her death elevated her far more than her actual talent--and if she were still alive she would be on the same level as a lot of the 90's female R&B artists.

Oan, Beyoncé isn't a 90's solo artist anyway. She was in a girl group, and went solo in the early 2000 era--an era which was also different from the 90's era. So technically Beyoncé is a 2000 era R&B singer--it was 2003 when she had her first solo album and since then she has continued to evolve.

Performance is another aspect where Aaliyah never came close. I knew B put on a great show by seeing video clips, but It wasn't until I took my wife to the Formation tour that I realized that she is in a class by herself.

Beyonce has more powerful vocals then Aaliyah... Aaliyah voice was more laid back, and smooth. yet when Aaliyah performed live, she tried to add power to her vocals by singing with a deeper voice, and most time it didn't translate well.

Beyonce became solo in 2003

everybody falls off :manny:

Mariah use to drop diamond albums in her sleep....what that last joint do? :dame:

what about Monica? Brandy?

Lets be reality.

Aaliyah was dope.I wish we could leave it at that.

I know its hard to when we dont get to see an artist reach their peak, especially when they pass right as they were about to really take off...happened to Pac and Big...but we foolin if we really think those artists would be on top of the game 15 years later....nobody does that...
