If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

My point is that she beat them out for Female Music V-I-D-E-O.

Your statement is worded like she was beating out Britney and Christina on Sales or Grammys even AMAs when she never did. :sas1:

That is my point. :sas2:

Sure thing gump.
Gee... IF Aaliyah wasn't that big, how the hell did she beat a PRIME Britney SPEARS, and Christina AGUERILLA at anything ???
that was the point of my post..
Aaliyah was very popular at the time of her death, granted TRY AGAIN came out the year before, and was HUGE... and Are U That Somebody was HUGE.... Her last album, the self-titled one which came out a month before her death was already GOLD before she died..

This notion that AAliyah was some underground ARtist that wasn't known till she died narrative is farce..

My Pops Forever RIP
She woulda been on the Sade schedule when it came to doing music because she woulda wound up an actress first. That Matrix money = studio? :childplease:

At the same time, if Aaliyah was alive, that Roc-A-Fella breakup woulda been uglier than it was. Dame woulda had to put hands on Hov once that scandal broke.

Bey woulda looked super ratchet had she hooked up with Jay after Jay was fukkin with Aaliyah

She'd be Brandy, Monica, Mya status in 2016

This.

Also people gotta stop comparing current day Beyonce to Aaliyah. Beyonce has had more to time to improve as a singer and overall performer.

If you're gonna do the comparisons. It's gotta be circa 01/02.

I think out of anybody to die from the music industry Aaliyah definitely benefited the most from death.

People have to get over this notion that death somehow elevates artists. You have to do something worthwhile when you're living in order to mean something once you're gone. There's a lot of artists who have passed away, but don't really have the legacy like that because the music just wasn't timeless like that. There is no narrative to write without the work. Death is just the period at the end of the story because there's nothing more to write, so people just become more appreciative because of the void.

Haven't read the thread

Aaliyah's music was too "black" for that kind of success imo. Her music was for us.

When you have top 5 and #1 singles in the Hot 100, it's clearly not 'too black', it's broken in on the pop side. We ain't talkin' about Jill Scott. Aaliyah wasn't just hitting on the R&B charts, she had big pop hits and was a TRL favorite.

Far as this Aaliyah/Brandy/Monica debate, I don't know how/why anyone thinks she left them in the dust when it came to hits.

Aaliyah: Back & Forth, At Your Best, Age Ain't Nothin, One In A Million, If Your Girl Only Knew, 4 Page Letter, Are You That Somebody, Try Again
Monica: Dont Take It Personal, Before You Walk Out of My Life, Why I Love You So Much, For You I Will, First Night, Boy Is Mine, Angel Of Mine
Brandy: Wanna Be Down, Baby, Best Friend, Brokenhearted, Sittin Up In My Room, Boy Is Mine, Sittin On Top..., Have You Ever...

They were running neck-and-neck between '94-'01, all had #1s, all were going platinum or better... it was no landslide win for any one of them... and if anyone takes it, it's Brandy because in addition to that she was doing TV and movies during those years as well.

of course...but it is very difficult to sustain longevity in the industry especially as a female artist. There is literally only one girl from the 90s still doing it big and its Beyonce. I just dont think Aaliyah was on that level but who knows.

Beyonce' hasn't made better music than Aaliyah
Beyonce's doesn't evoke any type of emotion
Aaliyah wasn't really a dancer so it's a moot point of even bringing up Beyonce's being a dancer when Aaliyah wasn't really a dancer like talking bout. BUT, point taken. Beyonce can dance.

Beyonce's stage performance is so robotic. It's overproduced. She can dance but it's so predictable it just comes off like "ok, now this is where she squats, behinds over, twerks a bit and then smiles"

Eh, gimmie a performance like this all day over Beyonce's predictable robotic stage performance

I don't know if these guys were even around back then with half the things I'm reading. The song you posted above was a huge hit & was attached to the Romeo Must Die soundtrack with Jet Li & that movie was a success. DMX & Anthony Anderson both were in it. She died before finishing Queen of the Damned I believe but Aaliyah was a major star when she was alive. Everyone who was around back then knows Beyonce slid in that lane with Aaliyah's passing.

I can always can count on you to come through with the real. Yeah, either some of these nikkas won't born yet or either too young to remember but that song was a huge hit and Aaliyah was just started to cross over by the time she started acting.

nikkas fail to realize, Beyonce came out in 98', in 2001 Aaliyah was already a star and by 2003 Beyonce' was then a solo star just breaking out. Just look back at that interview I posted on the 1st page of this thread where Beyonce is INTERVIEWING Aaliyah on the red carpet of the MTV Music Awards. Bey would later hit it big in 03' as a SOLO star but just 2 years before that, Aaliyah was well on her way and just starting to blossom evne more. So imagine if Aaliyah was still alive after doing her movies and with more music on the away 2 years later. She was really just getting started with really taking over and getting even bigger as an artist when you really think about.

In the 90's, competition was stiff. I'm talking bout the early to mid 90's. Aaaliyah held her own and by the turn of the new millennium was still in demand and growing as an artist from singing to acting. There's not a doubt in my mind that she would be the biggest female artist in R&B and Pop right now.

She'd be in her late 30's now but ain't Bey in her mid to late 30's right now and the biggest name in music? Aaaliyah would've owned this last decade IMO

This is true. Aaliyah was never as huge as Beyonce has been as a solo artist. Had she lived, she probably wouldn't have been either. Beyonce is a performer and has seemingly worked non stop whether it is touring or making albums. Aaliyah had years between albums. Her performances weren't near the events or spectacles that Beyonce's are.

Aaliyah's music has more staying power though. She could afford the breaks because the music still sounded fresh, which is why artists like Drake and J. Cole, and several others can use it as a touchstone now. It still resonates now, which is why she's held in such regard.
