Yes.
We've established that 94% of the hip hop albums released in 1994 did NOT go platinum. Going platinum was incredibly rare. Let's see about gold now.

So 87% of 1994 albums did NOT go gold or platinum. Getting a plaque in 1994 was extremely rare.
Albums that are considered classics or even just held in high regard didn't get a plaque.
Jeru
Common
Pete & CL
O.C.
Organized Konfusion
The Beatnuts
Gangstarr
Gravediggaz
Artifacts
The Fugees (not a classic or held in high regard...but even the Fugees struck out the first go round)

Also - the albums that did go gold or platinum - are not representative of the best albums or even the albums that got the most play.

Don't act.

Don't act like everybody wasn't fuccin' wit' Da Brat. We was lovin' her chit.
We didn't know who Nas was for the most part.
The singles got nationwide radio/video play for sure. I liked them. Especially the one with the house party video. But are you acting like she factored in on any serious discussion of hip hop? I didn't know anybody in northern CA who copped the album...

You're maing my point - "the singles got nationwide radio/video play for sure. I liked them."
Brat was goin' plat, gettin' play, being felt - we knew who she was. A lot of us didn't know Nas.

And in 1994 I was 11, so I wasn't having "serious discussion of hip hop". I'll let you tell that...

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
From who though? :patrice:
Her album was bigger...Nas was underground and there's no denying it...he was known amongst the hip hop heads and in the Tri State but that's really it for the most part..most Nas fans got into him from It Was Written....no question...his lack of commercial reception and him getting snubbed for lyricist of the year is what influenced him to make It Was Written...

At that age I wouldn't expect you to know who he was.
everyone. funkdafied was an enourmous hit back then.
I'm not shytting on Brat :whoa:
Sure it was a little derivative...JD was cashing in on that G-Funk wave...but when people say she was getting more love than Nas in 94...we need to dig a little deeper and really analyze what was going on. Brat and Nas were on two different levels back then. Plus didn't JD write all of Brat's rhymes for that album? I could be wrong about that :whoa:

Nas was known nationwide...but he was underground. His biggest audience was probably Tri-State...I've never seen sales figures but I can't imagine how that couldn't be true as hip hop was still regional in 94.
I think we may be saying the same thing...but just to be sure.
Brat sold more...but when we say she got "more love" who are we talking about?

She got love from the casual listeners...she didn't come into her own style yet so she was basically the female Snoop at that time...bit everything about him...style..flow..catch phrases...and he was huge at the time so the casual listener gravitated towards her...Nas was known nationwide by the hip hop heads...but for casual listeners he was mostly Tri State....
