If Internet message boards and Social Media was around in 94 what would be the reception to Illmatic and Ready 2 Die?


I see this what alot of album i hear today, Message board and social media members are totally convinced that people can't be loving these projects that much. And it has to be this huge cover up to push a artist and brainwash the fans.

Obviously this has been going on with Kendrick latest project, but i felt this way since Cole album dropped.

But back to topic i truly believe if these internet outlets were available in 94 that half the people would be screaming from the mountains that Illmatic and Ready 2 die is all internet hype and its nothing compared to Paid in full Ect.

The shyt gets kinda corny and cause u essentially disrespecting the fans by saying they can't think for themselves(and u might be right on some of them), but u can say the same about alot of dudes with who love illmatic, cause the hype around that album have hip hop fans who dont even like that album saying its the goat or classic just cause its the consensus in hip hop. shyt i know people that dont even get the album, it goes way over they head but they keeping naming it in they top album(corny follower shyt)

but there are truly fans that love the music that's being released today, shyt regardless of how people feel this is the music, the youth is living it day in and day out and it will touch them in a way that might not touch a older head that lived through the Nas, Big, Hov, X, Pac(90s era).

I think basically if it was like today people would be saying the same thing as Wang, it's not classic not as good as albums prior, it's too soon, people would point out the slightest flaw to try and discredit the album, then you have people who would say it's the greatest record they ever heard.

Oliver Wang's commentary is superb. Should be required reading for all these "THIS IS SO CLASSIC" newbies and said album just came out 2 hours ago.

The best music in the world is usually quite simple. It's not elephants flipping and a trapeze with a guy breathing fire. It's straightforward transcendent shyt. Stuff that's beautiful and straightforward but also complex and meaningful in its own way.

Throwing everything and the kitchen sink at an album does not a classic make. When you're young, clusterfukks are cool. But when you get older, not so much.

Social Media was very limited back in 94....shyt I remember those days VERY clearly and I never heard of the internet in 1994.

I personally think if SM were around like we have it today, Illmatic and Ready 2 Die would have blown up WAY bigger than it already had.

But we can't really talk about both albums equally, because for anyone that was back around then will tell you....Illmatic was a VERY underground album by comparison.

Mainstream wise, Nas had some singles and videos but only certain nikkas really checked for him like that BEFORE IWW. Illmatic was the kind of album where your every day kind of guy would have a walkman, and a faded cassette/bootleg of the album walkin down the block....Ready 2 Die was the kind of album you heard from some live ass system bumpin down the street in a Lexus,Benz, Jag etc..they just had two different audiences.

Either way I think SM would have simply given them even more exposure and they would have sold ALOT more from the jump then they had without it.

Illmatic was a non-factor in '94 outside of NY...and Big didn't actually start blowing up nationwide until he dropped the "one more chance" & "big poppa" singles in '95...the primary topic of discussions would likely be BONE/Eazy-E & Snoop/Death Row in '94.

Album was borderline underground in '94 but with a heavy mainstream, industry/media push...he had nationwide video/radio play, songs played on New York Undercover and everything...he was basically shoved down our throats by the industry and folks still didn't go out and buy his album.

Nobody was even checkin for Nas despite the attempts by the industry/media to shove him down our throats... until he got that Lauryn Hill stimulus package in '96.

Nas's standing in '94 is nowhere near comparable to dudes that are doing 300k 1st week sales in a age where you can get their music in a matter of seconds for free with the click of mouse
