Royce did get a GOLD Plaque from the bad meets evil album though can't take that away from him even though it was with Marshall, point is, he did it point blank!

I only know of this nikka cause of eminem...

Technically speakin', his lyrics on point...

I find his voice and delivery borin'... His subject matter is corny, he's like another wack ass d12 member (except eminem and proof) on steroids.

He would be a contender for one of the G.O.A.T.S, I strongly believe Royce da 5'9" has the complete package to be the greatest and we all know it's mandatory to be on a major to be considered anything relevant or catch anyone's attention. With that being said, the right producers, a major budget and his potential to make classic songs would def put him in talks with the ice cubs, pacs, BIGs and Nas's, no question! F*ck what anyone says! :takedat:

:what:

are you serious? he got a cosign and push from the biggest hip hop star since pac died.

he probably has an unlimited budget due to this cosign, and can sign any producers, and have any guest spots for cross over appeal he wanted. DESPITE all of these resources, he never blew.

:yeshrug:

i call a spade a spade mang, royce was never meant to be a star. and this is coming from someone who likes his music from time to time.

SINY!!
The ship sailed on this one already....in case people forgot (after all it was a long time ago)......he was signed to Columbia, had access to big producers (The Neptunes, Hit-Men, Premier, Alchemist, Trackmasters, etc), the Eminem co-sign....meanwhile every single he drop for Rock City flopped.....

That was his best chance.....oh btw back then the climate to move units was much better!!

It sounds very similar in style to every other T-Minus produced track (or imitation) with the slow ominious beat and many of the same effects as all the other (I'm On One, She Will, HYFR, She Don't Put it Down like You, My Moment, etc)...dude has a very identifiable signature sound that just so happens to be very popular in mainstream hip hop at the moment...surely you don't think Kendrick and his label just randomly decided to pick one what's basically one of drake's inhouse producers for his lead-in single by pure happenstance...they wanted a "sound", and they got it......and the hook is in the sing songy catchy style that every odd numbered hit on the radio has had since Drake blew up...

SP and On One doesnt sound similar at all (My moment and One one sound exactly the same. Thats a better comparison and one ive made before) SP sort of resembles HYFR, but HYFR is a lot bouncier. I think SP has its own lane, although I wont deny that he chose T-Minus because he has a solid track record.

I'm not dismissing it...I very much enjoy the artistry and meaning of the song ..I'm just not naive enough to think that it had more to do with the song being as big of a hit as it is than is the case...or like the content so much that I use kind of jedi mind trick on myself and deny the fairly obvious fact that it sounds very much like any number of recent hit songs....the fact that it sounds VERY MUCH like what's currently hot in the context of contemporary hip hop has infinitely more to do with than how smart it is...

Lets be fair here. The examples you used are old hits from over a year ago (the drake songs), and two of them werent hits at all, so its not as if Kendrick is sharking a ubiquitous sound thats ultra hot right now. He went after a cat with a good track record, who makes good beats that have proven popular (pretty much by drake exclusively. Its not like T Minus is the Neptunes at their peak type popular). Using TMinus looks like it was more for sound, than just grabbing a generic hot producer. Again, SP is a great record. He didnt sacrifice popularity for a vision.

That's all well and good...but I can assure you that clubs full of people ain't yelling the hook of the song while holding up cups of ciroc or remy and using it as the soundtrack of celebration, and that the song didn't race to the top of the urban radio charts... because of how poignant they find Kendrick's exposition on the roots and effects of alcohol use :heh: ....it's because it just sounds like a hot ass song....the whole "random unsuccessful rapper can't pop because the only way you can pop is to dumb down to a retard level" thing is a classic crutch...an act like Kendrick is the proof...long as you make it actually sound dope, you can rap about damn near anything and have it pop...it's just that the art of hitmaking (and it is an art) is nowhere as mindless and easy as people make it seem...and it's a skill that many of the dudes that have that crutch used for them, just don't have....the difference between Swimming Pools being one of the biggest hits of the year and (just as an another recent example) Lupe's bytch Bad was thrown in the bushes, isn't a rejection of Lupe's message and the embrace of Kendrick's...one was just a hotter song

Be careful not to create strawmans, and create arguments I didnt make. I never claimed that it was only popular because it was smart, I simply claimed that it widened its appeal. For club heads it worked because the song is simply hot, and for those who look for substance in their music the song worked as well. There is also some bleed over, as Im sure club heads arent oblivious to SP's deeper message. Thats a perfect pop song.

As far as what makes or doesnt make a a hot song --- remember, artists with messages and wordplay have had almost zero success before kendrick. How many socially conscious records have had success in the last 10 years, between the cruck, snap, and swag movements that have completely dominated hip hop? Lupe? Maybe, but his hits have used white pop stars and have gone for the exclusively pop route and radio. B.O.B, average rapper, has done the same. Kendrick is the first new rapper in forever to have a successful, conscious album. You telling me that all the rappers before him sucked and didnt deserve success?

Royce has talent...he is a natural born spitter, he can deliver some mean ass bars and flows.

But in terms of makin' a hit commercial to the wider audience, I just don't see it. He was embraced by "real" HipHop heads that loved "Scary Movies" or "Boom" but as soon as he tried to do some other shyt (like the joint with Sara Stokes), it flopped. Unfortunately to say, he can ride Em's coat-tails, ghostwrite, be with his likewise commercially unsuccesful peers in Slaughterhouse, but he will never reach that mainstream status.

wasn't Rock City basically exactly what you're talking about? beats from cats like Trackmasters, Neptunes, Premo, a feature from Eminem (only the chorus but there was a video and Em was in it too) and this was coming at a time when Em was at his peak commerically, Royce had just been known to write for Dre on 2001, he was on Columbia which is a major label... BUT

like BIGDENNISUK said, Death Is Certain is his best album (by far IMO) and it has NO commercial appeal, no "it" producers and no commercial singles. i don't know how well it sold but i doubt it was very much.

"major label push" usually equates to a forced single & "the right producers" means the new "it" producers who are usually fly by night or are jumping on a trend which doesn't last and dates the songs or albums badly sometimes.
