Cena was already a heel before he really became the guy.
They could have done it when he was feuding with the Rock.
I think at this point the window of opportunity has closed on a heel turn for Cena.

The window of opportunity just opened for heel Cena actually, with him easing gently out the door. You're allowed more creative latitude if they decide to use it

Slaughter wasn't ever the top guy in the E and Hogan did it well after his actual prime run as the number 1 guy in the business.
Cena is somewhere around 92-93 Hogan territory now. This could actually be the best time for him to start that slow turn

The only way I could have seen a heel turn was if it was against Daniel bryan, cm punk, undertaker, or the Rock.
Daniel is retired, Cm punk wants nothing to do with wrestling and the wwe, missed his chance with the rock fued, and undertaker is 99% done.
With Cena becoming less involved in wrestling and more involved with the acting roles, it'll never happen.

The absolute perfect way to do it was with him snapping and cheating to end Taker's streak. It would have been a hell of a lot better than the 1 in 21-1 spamming even though I love Heyman. Not only would have been a fresh shot in the arm for everybody, it would have guaranteed that he got the
from casuals, marks, smarks, kids, women and anybody in between. Plus assuming he got the exact same media coverage Brock did ending the streak, it may have gotten some eyes returning to the product for a short period of time.
The wwe will do whatever is the opposite of the best for them creatively so this will not happen.
....because then you'd cheer him.

Slaughter was never the top face of company so it wasn't a huge deal. Hogan was never truly accepted by WCW fans and was getting a mixture of boos in late 1995/early 1996 like Cena does now. Maybe not as much boos as Cena now but he wasn't the fan favorite like he was in the 80's.
