1. Someone with 5 years experience working as an editor for a newspaper but got laid off due to budget issues, and was unemployed for a year...but has only a GED...

2. or someone who just got their masters in English with a specialty in writing? But only had 1 year of experience working in an internship?

if both were applying for the same job and are at the moment unemployed?

1st example is someone who is around 37 years old, Male
2nd example is a 28 year old female just finished graduating to get her masters....

This hiring has nothing to do with gender or race (hence why I aint specify) ...so dont evaluate it like that

both knockout the interviews, both have good resumes....who are you hiring?

Somewhere between OH & NV
It all depends on the position. :manny:

If the position I'm hiring for doesn't require a Master's degree, then why not give the person with 5 years experience as an editor for a newspaper a chance? He DOES deserve it.

2nd... prolly the 28 yr old. Nowadays companies are tryna hire younger faces with credentials.

so if were talking about the health related field...is someone more likely to get hired with experience? or academic achievement? with this economy in mind?

I was actually rolling with guy #1 for sure until you said he's 37 years old. He only has 5 years experience in the field at his age but is almost 10 years older than the chick. I'd be skeptical about his ability to pick up new skills, work long hours and basically adapt as necessary.

Of course it all depends on the industry and job in question. But that degree and masters + being 10 years younger :yeshrug:

What is the position?

You need academic achievement to get your foot in the door in healthcare. They will train you after that.

Depends.

Who is cheaper?

What type of experience am I looking for in this position? Does the guy with the five years of experience know how to work with x software/programs? Is this position client-side? What are their interpersonal skills like?

On paper I'd hire the guy first.

BUT I'd have to look at what they both wanted from me, whether or not they are both quick learners or stuck in doing their own thing, and what types of demands they would create in balance with what types of benefits they bring to the table.

It's not a black and white issue, but the guy would have the edge with 5 years of experience. The only reason why the masters degree and younger age may come into play is because I have a blank slate that I can mold to do whatever I want for the job who will be cheaper to employ.
