Depends.

Who is cheaper?

What type of experience am I looking for in this position? Does the guy with the five years of experience know how to work with x software/programs? Is this position client-side? What are their interpersonal skills like?

On paper I'd hire the guy first.

BUT I'd have to look at what they both wanted from me, whether or not they are both quick learners or stuck in doing their own thing, and what types of demands they would create in balance with what types of benefits they bring to the table.

It's not a black and white issue, but the guy would have the edge with 5 years of experience. The only reason why the masters degree and younger age may come into play is because I have a blank slate that I can mold to do whatever I want for the job who will be cheaper to employ.

ok so lets say this....you are 25 you have the option of getting a masters like the girl in option 2...or have the option of getting hired at an intern at an editorial company. Would you take the internship and gain work experience? while sacrificing going to school and getting a masters? Or would you say fukk the internship, and go to school and hope your degree gets you into more doors?

Your master's program can't get you an internship or work experience? I'd question the value of that master's program.

University of Phoenix? :troll:

guy number one was making 45 k a year at his old company...he hasnt worked for a year so he probably wouldn't be picky at that point.

Well, i'd hire the chick fresh out of grad school.
Safe to assume she'd be a better employee because she's already invested in the field, probably doesn't want to be an intern/low-level editor for ever and would thus put forth better effort and be more engaged.

long term, the young lady can be groomed exactly the way my company needs.

being that she has that modern education she has more to offer as far as cutting edge (yet formal and formulated) ideas if a situation calls for it

Is your masters paid for? If the answer to this is yes, then go get your degree. Paid Masters just don't come along everyday.

What type of internship is this? Is it like the New York Times or is it some podunk company no one's ever heard of? If it's a once in a life time opportunity, take the internship...if it isn't, remember you can easily get an internship any day of the week, especially if you are earning your Masters at the same time.

Also, you can do an internship while you get a Master's Degree. The best internships I got were while I was earning my Masters.

If I could go back though, I would intern and get a job and THEN apply for a Masters, just because there are people graduating with Masters everyday who have no work experience and you learn so much more from your degree after you've actually worked somewhere because you know what questions to ask and what type of material you should be studying.

Overall, employers rank like this:

1. Job experience (not just internship) + Advanced Degree
2. Job experience + Degree
3. Job experience
4. Advanced Degree
5. Degree

Experience + education means the most, but someone with 10 years of experience is going to win out over someone who just has a degree, especially since you take into consideration things like cost. There are all types of things employers have to worry about:

  • I might have to pay someone with that advanced degree more because I'm worried that they will work for me for 3 months and leave for something better.
  • Will that guy that has no advanced degree/bachelors but work experience be able to learn the software, new methods of doing things?
  • How much pay is this person going to want for their skills experience vs their degree? :mindblown:

There is so much to think about. It's much better to just go for your work experience and your education and let them worry about all this shyt.
