No, they didn't fail as parents.

However if you KNOW you want your children to go to college, then you should do some kind of preparation early in their lives. I think waiting until your child is in 11th grade to start preparing them for college is irresponsible.

:snoop:

But the problem with this is 99% of parents aren't even passing down enough for a semester! Not even enough for four years of books! That is bad parenting. That is creating another child dependent on the state/government for it's most important need which is education.

No one is stating or expecting every parent to have 30K warchest relaxing, but is 5K too much for 18 years of saving?

shh that's enough to cover four years of books or cover a semester of living expenses. There is a reason why there is a sharp rise in private school loans. Parents are failing.

What if the parent saved enough for the child to go to a community college/transfer to a 4-year state school, but they want to go to Harvard?

:stopitslime: where do you get the 99% number from. Federal loans and grants don't usualy pay for full rides, so most all parents are adding money to the situation. Private school loans are rising because tuition is going up while salaries are staying stagnant or even going down when considering rising costs.

No.

Parents are suppose to prepare you for life...

My parents made sure both me and my sister did what we needed to do to get grants, scholarships and we did.

They see me trolling, they hating.....
Truth be told, the problem lies in both the fact that higher education in the United states is nothing but a big business, and that in of itself is tragic when there are plenty of advanced democratic societies that don't charge an arm and a leg for an education (and some don't charge anything at all)

and sh1tty parents being aware of all of this and still having kids

Harvard degree is a calculated risk. And you bring up a good point. Most people aren't utilizing community colleges. College is a risk and with so many people not graduating on time, graduating at all, community college is a great low risk option. If a kid should fail out they won't be staring at 100k in debt.

I'm not upset but if you want to understand why blacks irregardless of country will continue to have zero generational wealth, peep these responses.

Well, we still have time to fix it so instead of being a jerk and snide. How about we figure out a way to do better? :manny:

It's easier to criticize than fix the problem at hand.

You right in a way.

Black people cant expect to pass on wealth when you have teenagers paying 20k a year for education on some "it'll teach you a lesson about money" :comeon:

Don't have kids, but then again you come from inferior stock so the concept of leaving the younger generation in better shape then you were is foreign to you. :trash:

LOL! I don't like your tone but I cant say I disagree with this.

I think parents really need to focus on setting the next generation up. Generational wealth is important to me and in fact, it's my only long term goal at the moment.

I don't know I don't live in the states so I don't know how your education systems work but $20k a year for a piece of paper that doesn't really guarantee you a job right after? Especially in this economy?

We shouldn't limit ourselves just to traditional schooling.
