so you want the people who have a history of unjustly incarcerating, spying on and murdering black americans to have increase unprecedented surveillance capabilities and censorship powers in stead of a partly owned chinese company collecting data other americans companies are collecting?chinese officials have no legal authority over us.

Chinese officials are trying to overthrow America. I do not want a world where China is in charge. As bad as life can be in the US, it's a million times worse in China.

The article states that Zuckerberg had to end the deal. The US government can lean on an American social media company if they're doing something wrong. They have no way to lean on a Chinese social media company. The Chinese government leans on the Chinese social media company.

they literally hold all data from U.S users on servers in the U.S. The U.S can charge any company exec with a crime just like foreign countries can do to execs working for foreign companies. some high level exec for twitter in brazil quit since they were told they'd be criminally liable for the actions of the company in their country because of content they wouldn't remove. thats how these things always work.

Is there a Chinese lobby group paying our politicians to propose bills that protect Chinese interests? What is the AIPAC equivalent of China? :lupe:

No one cares. They been spying on your phones since 20 years ago and privacy issues were addressed and dismantled during the 9/11 era

If u having nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about, who cares about porn history? Remember that? That was the common talking point online around allowing the government to snoop

You need to worry about these new cars and the privacy issues behind them but u slow talking about wi fi routers. Get your insurance increased on your 24 Honda cause u loaned it to your daughter for the night and your insurance company raises rates 2 months later cause they added her to the policy

Talk about that cause that's really happening

Drive a new car worried about privacy dinosaur brehs
Although I don't think the chances of this government becoming outright tyrannical (unless that Mango Mussolini gets the presidency); at least not in the short-term; remember the government has been known to move goalposts. I can think of several scenarios of something once being legal and seemingly innocuous that flipped and became criminal. And now the government has evidence of every transaction you've ever made regarding that law. And being that the average American is woefully ignorant of criminal law in this country, I can see a bad precedent being set.

But to your point, corporations will abuse it even more. And again to your point, we've addressed this in 2002 and 2013 and most people didn't give a damn.

Smh...

“If you have access to any communications, the government can force you to help it spy. That means anybody with access to a server, a wire, a cable box, a Wi-Fi router, a phone or a computer. … If this provision is enacted, the government can deputize any of these people against their will and force them, in effect, to become what amounts to an agent for Big Brother.”

The TikTok ban is supposedly about security

So why did this bill get signed?

Imagine how someone like Trump can use this.

Imagine Trump ordering all the communications from Hillary, Obama, and anyone else he considers an adversary to be monitored.

No private conversation is private anymore.

Do you have the text of this bill?

Duh? Anyone that still believes they can't read your text, see every image you send, listen to your VN etc, should not be allowed to reproduce.

While I don't fully agree with the TikTok ban, I think it's because it's a dominant Chinese player in the social media game rather than them just being Chinese alone. You also have to look at what China allows in their country. They don't allow any foreign services unless they bend to the will of the Chinese government. You can't use Instagram, Facebook, and other service in China. If they're not going to allow our services in their country, why allow them in ours.
Unless I'm mistaken, the Chinese equivalents to those apps don't allow the data to be sold.

In America, they do. It's part of the reason why the tiktok ban is a meaningless measure. There is literally nothing stopping a Chinese shell company from buying your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter data from a data broker. As long as that's legal here, your details are still up for grabs.

And the priority is different. In China they're using your data to jail you if you piss off the government. Here they're doing the same thing AND private companies are using your data to send you multiple scam calls and texts a day.

to prevent affordable EV's from china from being sold to americans, they already priming the american public with national security concerns about the data the cars collect which is the same data american auto companies have been collecting for years now too.

This is straight protectionism because if we get Chinese evs, US automakers won’t be able to compete.

if they can't see a car americans can't afford to buy working earning minimum wage, oh well. :yeshrug:

it's free market when they want to move american jobs overseas but government protection when U.S consumers want cheaper goods? :martin:

chinese car manufacturers may have something to offer too, like maybe make their car's more open to repair and even software modding instead of the backbox's American cars have increasingly become.
