I would love for somebody to drop some knowledge on some IT stuff and the expectations I should have going into that field being a black male...

Honestly it wouldn't matter if someone just got an Associates Degree and became a Human Resource Manager, out here that shyt pays well and you don't go home feeling tired as fukk like you do from blue collar jobs. I did warehouse work, that shyt should inspire anybody to get some type of education because lifting heavy ass items for 8 hours a day while never sitting down ain't cool.
you werent union i bet :mjpls:

Good thread.

First off, some bros need to stop thinking that they're WHITE and can coast by doing the same shyt some white boys do. nikkas using random examples of white men who became successful entrepreneurs without college educations. Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, etc. nikka, it's easier for them to do that because they're WHITE. :dahell:

Don't make it seem like it's just so easy for a black man with no college degree to just magically do the same thing.

If you want to get anywhere, you're going to need at least a Bachelor's....and if that's not for you, then learn a trade.

Don't get me wrong, i don't think we should treat attaining a college degree as a MILESTONE either. But it should be something that's generally EXPECTED of us. Like it is for Asians. Check this:

We're behind all of them. And we hold the least amount of Bachelors degrees (17%). Notice, these are comparisons to other groups of MEN, not black women. We need to stop comparing how we're doing to black women all the time and actually compare how we're doing compared to other men for once. Stop all the "education is the white man's tool" shyt and get more educated so you won't be as limited.

Earnings-and-Employment1.jpg

The 37% of African American males who worked full time all year in 2013 had median earnings of $37,290 in 2013 compared to $48,099 for ‘all men’ (above table). Of Black males ages 16 to 64 years old, 40% had no earnings in 2013 which was higher than the 30% with no earnings of ‘all men’ in the same age group. Also a larger percentage of Black males 16 to 64 were unemployed than for ‘all men’ (11.2% compared to 7.3%) and were living below the poverty level (26%) than ‘all men’ (15%).

Black men with degrees generally fare better than black men with just a high school diploma. It sounds good to claim that you don't need a degree (or trade) and it's a "worthless piece of paper" but black men without degrees face a very real glass ceiling, it limits your options. The only way i'd say you don't need it is if your pops/family has a lot of money and you don't have to worry about anything. But that's not the case for most of us.

To answer OP's question, i think it's pride. Like i've known cats who graduated high school but then instead of going to college, they found a job somewhere and just kept working. Now they're around 24-26, and i think some of the ones who might be considering going back to school think they're too old, but you're never too old to go back, 20s is the best time anyway, 30s is ok too but if you're in your 20s go ahead now and get it over with. No one will look at you funny for going to school in your 20s, you likely won't even be the oldest person in class. Some bros think they're too cool for that, some rather just work a dead end job or sell drugs. I've helped some low income guys better their situation, i helped a few get back into school (local CC) to get a degree or trade, and also helped some get in the military. It beats working at Wendy's or landing in the pen for trying to sling coke.

And to the bros on here who said they can't afford the tuition, books, etc. Apply for financial aid, nikka. Find out if you qualify for a Pell Grant (you don't have to pay it back and may have a little money left over to keep). And if you're really hard up for cash, you can also take out a Stafford Loan. You don't need good credit or a cosigner for a Stafford Loan. You just have to pass a little entrance test. My friend took one out in college and used some of the money to buy himself a car to get around. This is like what i've seen from too many bros offline, say they're gonna go back but when u ask them what happened with school, they say they can't afford it (which is understandable) but then when you say, "did you apply for financial aid?" it's dead silence. It's FREE to fill out a FAFSA. And if you're working and not able to go to classes on campus, then take classes online. Most likely if you're one of the ones saying you can't afford to pay for tuition, books, etc because your income isn't enough, you likely will qualify for some form of financial aid. But you'll never know until you apply.

I don't know anything about the OP's background or about anyone's anecdotes but the data is very clear here:

igure01-earnings-by-degree.gif

BLS data from 2009 however the trends are the same today. Trade or degree, you need to get an education or face very long odds for you and your family living a comfortable life.

Exactly
