an app for remote accessing a PC. Say your parents need help on their PC. If you both install Teamviewer you can remote control their PC and fix any issues from another computer.

The app has been compromised meaning hackers are using it to remote access people's computers and using web browsers like Chrome that save password info to go on PayPal and similar sites and send themselves money or buy stuff and send it to themselves. They're also using script programs to remove the asterisks on password fields and get the actual passwords.

really

sounds like the perfect hacking tool, the whole idea of a app for remote access is just a bad idea

What is everyone thinking about using now? A lot of the other alternatives seem to be paid or not as easy to configure.

Yeah I work for an MSP, so I'd say 90% of my calls already have an agent installed to remote in through software called LabTech. But I definitely need TeamViewer to do my job.

Any alternative? This application has saved my ass various times over the years in various ways

I wouldn't panic, yet. TeamViewer has been saying user error for a few days --- there's a possibility it is. I have to sweep entire networks due to ransomware or root kits at least once per week, because people just click anything with an underline or a clip. That, combined with password reuse and people wonder how people find their Amazon and bank accounts.

I honestly think TeamViewer is still as safe as you take network security. Burn a live CD and run it? Build a test Linux box and use the TeamViewer? Segment the box from the rest of your network? :manny:

Otherwise, I'd say look into LogMeIn and Windows' Remote Assistance. I've never personally used either but LogMeIn has a decent market share and I think Remote Assistance is on every version of Windows from 7-10.

Many people have PayPal accounts. Probably more use their web browsers to auto save passwords. This is effectively no different than someone siting down at your desktop and using that stuff. Even beyond that online accounts get compromised all the time these days. People in foreign countries sell millions of login credentials on the black market. Gmail and Yahoo were the latest victims I can remember.

I'm not worried about my computer, but I'm wondering if I should tell my Grandma to uninstall it.

I occasionally use Teamviewer to remote in and fix stuff for her and it's pretty convenient, and I don't really feel like having to teach her to use some other program, but I definitely don't want her to get got by some hacker either. :francis:

Based on what I've read, here's what I did just to be safe:
- Changed my TV account pw to something unique
- enabled 2FA
- removed all financial related saved passwords from browsers
- Disabled TV from running on start up and only have it running when I need it

I checked my logs and didn't see any connections except my own. All bank/amazon/ebay accounts look straight. I only use TV to control my HTPC and add new media to it.
