as a hiP hoP historian the first claim when critiquing some artist is I actually saw them Perform live in their Prime in their PomP. this is the case with Pac & Biggie.
Biggie: the first thing that people overlook and yet is so crucial to understanding the swagger & style of the brooklyn one was his strong jamaican heritage. from the first bar you can hear the influence of his mother's birth place. his swag is jamaican, his diction is heavily jamaican influenced. jamaican's are considered the coolest people on the planet and biggie more than any other artist from the island represented that to the fullest. (of course many may say 'whateva happened to busta rhymes?!?!')
biggie was a smart schooler and was definitely gifted in english like his mother. he had been trained to tell a story using traditional methods with a beginning, a middle, and an end. he did this brilliantly. his wittiness was undeniable too. and again that has much to do with his jamaican roots and being proud and boasie and telling a tale that shows him being in control but in a lite playful way. Lyrically, I'm not altogether convinced that biggie didn't have rhymes written for him but what is unsavoury was his overly hom0 erotic word play and constant references to A-hole and but? phuking. mister cee then diddy definitely influenced this negative side of his lyricism. and that was most definitely NOT jamaican.
Pac was a tour de force. It's difficult to exPlain to PPL how magnetic a character dude was. having seen him no more than 7 feet way once i listened to his lyrics again u realised how dude really lived it as he sPit it. technically, dude wasn't caught uP in the Purity of lyrics and catering to a leftie leanie elite who wanted nothing more than to sPend hour uPon hour dissecting the meanings of esoteric bars. Pac wasnt with that but that didnt mean he wasn't lyrics. Also during his DR days his beats were stuPendous and very jamaican too (streetfame being a classic examPle of that) and credit much go to SK. Pac was lyrical but to him it was abt the song and having his words easily digested and recited by his adoring fans rather than be dissected by wordsmiths & nerds who weren't abt to his front his financial obligations.

Pac loves Biggie and Biggie loves Pac because both of them acknowledges their talents. Biggie liked Pac for what he does, Pac liked Biggie for what he does. Both of them are totally different styles.

real talk i dont know what yall call lyricism cause big and pac kept it simple big just had better word play where pac was just more straight foward both was simple though if you really look at it bigs storys was crazy and pacs emotion brought something new to the game you have to respect both but to say that they were some lyrical genius is crazy never heard neither one spit a verse like Nas,3stacks,monch,or even pun. they was good at what they do and seperated themselves from the rest but it was because of either one of them being lyrical.
