You gotta address that shyt now with a sense of urgency. It won't go away by itself :francis:

I know somebody close to me who has been stuck in life for over a decade now. Barely making any progress. Instead he's succumbed to various addictions as coping mechanisms and escapism.

I'll tell y'all what I told him:

1) our bodies are somewhat like batteries in a sense. We need to store up a lot of energy and that energy needs to go somewhere. If you're not physically active on a regular basis, that energy is turned inwards (worry, overthinking, anxiety etc). It's no coincidence that with the rise of ppl living a sedentary lifestyle we've seen a rise in anxiety, depression and other mental ailments. Establish a daily regiment of physical exercise.

2) anxiety in particular is also a problem of the ego. This is true for social anxiety in particular. You think you're the center of everybody's attention and that they are judging you negatively when in most cases ppl are too wrapped up in their own struggles and subjective experiences of the world. The moment you begin to see ppl as conscious beings who exist independent of you or your thoughts, your social anxiety will decrease. It might sound counterintuitive, but many ppl who suffer from anxiety also have a sense of grandiosity about themselves. They see the world and ppl around them as mental projections and not realities that exist independently of their mental experiences.

3) you might need supplements like vitamin d3, magnesium, zink and Omega-3. Try these supplements for a few months and see if they help you.

Try the above steps before you hop of meds. Even though meds might ultimately work for you as well.

Anyone who has advise is free to contribute. Especially those who have overcome depression, anxiety and other mental problems.

But that's very different from what I mean by "talk therapy". I'm referring to spending months, maybe years "unpacking" your childhood and sharing your dreams etc.. it's a specific form of therapy called psychoanalysis. Think Freud and his cohorts. It has its place and I do enjoy delving into the theory behind it, but in general, what I've read from experienced psychologists, who specialize in treating men, is that this particular form of therapy is not useful to men. Certainly not as useful as other forms.

Rationally trying to understand your negative thoughts and belief systems, patterns of behavior etc is all useful. But there's a limit and the therapy has to involve some action is all I'm saying.

I think we basically agree tbh. Maybe I my initial post was too vague.
I definitely agree with that, I think other posters wanted to combat the common misconception that all therapy is psychoanalysis and just talking to somebody for an hour while they dig in your childhood... There are different forms and methods of therapy, like CBT you evoked but also others, and whatever the path, it involves the most action outside of the therapist's office.

They address it in the video I shared in my first post (2:13)

I'll add...black men go to black mental health therapist in mental health specialists. don't go to these white folks. It will just add to your mental stress. Nah, I'm dead serious.

Support Black psychologists and black psychiatrists. There really arent that many but they are very helpful.
Disagree

Go to someone who cares about your problems

I remember I went to a black counselor in HS and she basically told me she didn’t have time for my problems because she has kids that were going through things like getting kicked out their parents house for selling drugs…

And I was just like :gucci:… “they’re coming from a good home and selling drugs…”

Something that has been working for me is being goal-oriented. Both short and long-term goals are important.

The short-term stuff (Exercise more, switch up your diet, get a cert) is the kind of stuff that kicks you out of bed, the daily routine shyt.

The long-term goals work more as a compass for what you want to achieve. (graduate, get a better job, career goals).

It ain't easy. Hell, I'm down bad rn. But at least having things to work towards gives people measurable progress. It's definitely better than just getting swallowed up in bad thoughts.

Also, get your blood tested. Found out that my tiredness/sluggishness was attributed to pre-diabetes. Lost 80lbs and still got got by it.

Riding my recumbent trike helps fight off my depression.

What did the doctors say breh? I thought losing weight and changing your diet could prevent fullblown diabetes in a pre-diabetic.
