Not everyone in IT makes 6 figures, I know I certainly do not but the potential is there if people choose to take advantage of it. Between formal education, actual job experience and certifications, you can make 6 figures in your career and you don't even have to manage anyone.

Making 100k would require some serious certs or experience. Think the most I made was as a Systems Analyst II, that got me around 70k with no certs or education. Supervising a Windows 7 deployment at the moment though.. meh.. 60k is doable. They made me get my A+ for this crap.

For all those are claim to work in IT what does your job entail?
It is as diverse as you can possiblity have.
I do mainly network/Voice Engineering with a little bit of programming on the side (Bash and php)
But then are the windows folks, Linux folks and database folks.
The money is in programming and network engineering. it's very easy to learn how to fix a PC but it's not so easy to program or put up a functioning computer/voice network.
if you are not prepared to crack your brains it may not be for you

Anybody have a PMP cert becsuse I am studying for that. I am a Clincal System Analyst making close to 60 right out of college. Cant complain IT is the easiest field to make money in. Right now I am sitting on my ass just chilling.

As far as the origin of the IT meme, I'd trace it back to SOHH. StuntOne was the first guy I remember claiming to pull in six figures off IT. People gave him the
face because at that time most people viewed the IT guy like a high tech plumber. Making 50-75k is good money but nothing like the six figure salaries people are claiming now.
Eventually a couple more six figure IT guys popped up and along with a number of articles about POTENTIAL IT earnings it was generally accepted that IT = money.
The problem lies in the fact that there can only be so many at the top of any given field. Most IT guys are hourly like the rest of us peasants. To have so many IT guys on the forum and ALL of them seemingly making above 70k requires you to suspend your disbelief a tad. It's just another case of the Coli beats the odds.
