As far as the origin of the IT meme, I'd trace it back to SOHH. StuntOne was the first guy I remember claiming to pull in six figures off IT. People gave him theface because at that time most people viewed the IT guy like a high tech plumber. Making 50-75k is good money but nothing like the six figure salaries people are claiming now.
Eventually a couple more six figure IT guys popped up and along with a number of articles about POTENTIAL IT earnings it was generally accepted that IT = money.
The problem lies in the fact that there can only be so many at the top of any given field. Most IT guys are hourly like the rest of us peasants. To have so many IT guys on the forum and ALL of them seemingly making above 70k requires you to suspend your disbelief a tad. It's just another case of the Coli beats the odds.
In the grand scheme of things, 100k is not the "top"...at all but it's still 6 figures.
Computers/Technology are always gonna make money I don't know how you fail in IT unless you have no work ethic.
Exactly. I'm not doubting you can make good money. I know you can. Just wondering why we have such a high concentration of far above average salaries in the IT field on this forum. I'm just skeptical.

Basically. What y'all fail to understand is they're out here breaking bread for IT support and development. Government on every level and the private sector. Most operations rely heavily on Information Technology. 100K is pretty standard for an experienced IT professional. Now, you can phone it in and know enough just to get by and still make 60K+

Yea I was making 93k last year.
This year I am involved with bigger projects which also includes DR & BR design & SAN backend storage upgrades.
Now my salary will be 112k this year.
My employer encourages obtaining certs in which they will reward you with bonuses based off your based salary.
People who make the six figure salary in IT that I work with are Engineers like myself and Software Developers in which these guys can make millions espeically in the mobile market.
All in all a combination of experience, certs and where you live will get you past the 6 figure mark.

Are you saying most IT guys in a support role?
Also people need to get more specific in terms of when they are mentioning 'IT'
Your job title and role is very important in which you do in IT.
As I mentioned before if you are an Engineer or Software Developer then you can be easily making more than 80k a year (minimum) depending on the market and location.
People forget most of the cats that make the 6 six figures are contracted cats that have more than one gig. Only downfall there is no benefits

Until I win the lottery or more realistically start working for myself, I can't see me being anything else other than a IT Field Engineer. Getting paid full time hours during the week when only doing damn near part time hours, as well as a shytload of overtime with bonuses during the evenings and weekends......you can keep those boring ass regular 9-5 office jobs with your manager breathing down your neck every 10 minutes and dealing with office politics.

na. It's fun as hell to me. Like working on some projects right now for multiple hospitals around the country. I get to play with state of the art technology that is going to make the jobs of a lot of nurses & doctors much easier. It's a great feeling when you can see the direct impact your work has on people. all this while getting paid for it.
