Maybe that was due to the fact he had no crossover/commercial singles on his debut.

But the initial question was whether he was rapping better than naS in 94 and the answer is a clear yes. Along with all the other rappers I listed. Stick to the topic, we are talking about 94. So, the rappers I mentioned were generally more popular and absolutely NOTHING suggests illmatic influenced how they rapped. You can go to their records up to that point and see that is evident. So the question is what exactly did illmatic do? It didnt sell, it didnt influence... what did it do?
