I don't care about sales.
And again. Besides cube. Those albums you just listed are not being talked about 20 years later. So it must have had some impact no?
ehhhh... Sales in the 90's were a good way of gauging an albums acceptance since large scale bootlegging was uncommon. Yes albums got bootlegged but muthafukkaz were selling A LOT of albums then. Sales do matter in the time period we're talking about. You have to determine what made nikkaz go out in droves and purchase LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSES ALBUM, BUT NOT ILLMATIC.

20 years later, nikkaz is duped by that media push.
But that 20 year anniversary Resurrection :blessed:

Reasonable doubt went platinum in 2002 and had "ain't no " on it

Yet I feel you don't want to discuss that

when big was winning the 'best lyricist' award, people were outraged, because they felt NAS GOT ROBBED (not pac, twista, brat, kriss kross, outkast, or whoever else you mentioned)
there are too many stories of nas' PEERS stating the effect illmatic had on their 'pen game'!!
album took 7 years to go platinum. fine!! this though also means that people have been buying the album for 7 years!!
don't care what you say, but an album with no impact does not get bought for 7 years plus!!
not taking away from the other cats, but nas was the best lyricist hands down in 94 imo.
now that can be debated, but you cannot debate the influence illmatic has had on the rap game!!
sorry!!
hell, most of your idols fukk with illmatic.
it is well documented that pac loved it.
and we don't have to go into jay and lupe's love affair with the album!!

i don't fukk with complex, but just for you @intilectual!!

well deserved. it's a reason why when you ask what nas album is the best 9/10 illmatic is mentioned. it's not like other rappers(pac, big, ice cube, redman etc), where you'll get different answers a majority of the time. that album still hasn't been surpassed 20 year later and i don't think it ever will.

Before the review I had only heard 3 official joints from Nas. It Ain't Hard to Tell, Halftime and his verse off Live at the BBQ. Along with a freestyle he did on Stretch and Bobbito. Reading the 5 mic review made me wanna hear the album even more.

When my boy copped the tape I had him dub me a copy and boom, I was hooked. Whole album lived up to expectations for me.

Nobody was rapping like Nas back then. He literally created the template for future lyricists.

I know the buzz around "It Was Written" in 96 was way bigger than the buzz for "Illmatic" in 94, but it was for several reasons - The Message, If I Ruled the World, Street Dreams, the Wu-Tang high from the year before, Biggie being on the way, Nas being bigger & more respected after "Illmatic" marinated since it wasn't nearly as big commercially, etc.

can you imagine the reaction if a little asian chick with a gold tooth/grill gave a perfect review to a newcomers album today ?
:wtf: the people that gave the 5 Mics to Illmatic, were Chris Wilder (black man), Schott Jacobs (black man) and Matteo Glenn white dude.
