I'm 36 and seriously considering taking a karate class.

Did thread starter ever start martial arts?

Did Muay Thai and BJJ this weekend. Man I tell you grappling with blue belts sparring and high level strikers there is no substitute.

I did not. I've been doing light training since I work so much on my feet, so I haven't found a balance or been in the right shape. Both really. I'm thinking about adding shadow boxing to my routine, but I only have time for like a 45 minute home workout with my commute.

Hopefully I can find time to make it communal.

If you're new to martial arts I'd suggest boxing first. Also, it's never too late to learn how to defend yourself and loved ones.

I think boxing is the right route too. Folks have zero clue if you nice with hands (pause) what damage you can do. When I boxed for a year and half I was blown away how hard it was 20 years ago.

You will get in killer shape too. And this is coming from a karate guy.

I'm biased to learning striking first as it's just 101 that fights start standing up. But... learning to stop a takedown is very very useful.

Invest in these when you train

Amazon.com

If you're interested in kind a a basic learning there's a good series on basic Savate (French kickboxing) from the late Salem Assli

I was considering bjj but someone showed me a picture of this dude who got a deep hole in his armpit due to something you catch from rolling around with people on the mat. I'll just stick to keeping my hands and footwork nice.
