I'm 36 and seriously considering taking a karate class.

He's not really far off. Kyokushin dudes can tank damage. There is no pad work and there are no gloves. It's one of the more brutal sports similar to Muay Thai.

Yeah Kyokushin is very very hard. Tough style. My brother has a black belt in Isshin-Ryu. Very hard style too.

I got a black belt in Tang Soo Do, brown belt in TKD (a legit school) and take Muay Thai and BJJ. Tang Soo Do and TKD are Korean.

Stand-up and ground all have their plusses and minuses. Long as you got solid training that's the most important. I been focusing on ground (BJJ) lately just to switch it up after being in striking for so long. Though I still practice striking as well.

No matter where you go, do your research, check the lineage of the owner/instructor and take advantage of the free classes. Do they spar? Is the instructor involved? Are there a bunch of kid black belts (huge red flag).

Shotokan and Kyokushin are really good styles if you find one near you. Those are Japanese.

Try to pace yourself and enjoy. Don't get frustrated.

I came here to say the bolded. Think of your martial arts journey like school or military. Can a kid legitimately teach/lead and be taken seriously? Achieving your black belt is like graduating high school. It‘s just the beginning, not mastery. A bunch of kids running around with their frayed black belts is a sure sign of a McDojo. I have a black belt in Goju Ryu, and trained for years to achieve it, and on the night of my test, I went through a gauntlet fighting every Purple, Brown, and Blackbelt. I got the Sh!t beat out of me. Hell, even my white belt is full of dirt, grime and blood. When I trained other styles, I‘d wear it with honor, but also as a warning… “I ain’t no regular white belt“.

No lies told 💯

Man when I started in BJJ and Muay Thai and I talked with folks about my background in karate and TKD, the respect level those guys had for me went up 10x. They know you're serious and got skills. And to your point it's also a warning sign that if something goes sideways and they try to get a little too aggressive you can knock them out

Plus they know you're able to be trained and they treat you like a more of a live body when they spar you.

Isshin-Ryu, I don't know anything about. I actually got a school near me. :patrice: I wonder how good it is. No website

Isshin-Ryu is legit. Most martial arts websites are pretty generic if not non-fancy so not having a website can just mean it's a nice little small recreational club see if they have a Facebook page
