I think it's more anger at the fact he got cancer than at him telling him when he did. It's a shock no matter when you tell it. Maybe his dad thought that now that he graduated, op is a man, maybe he thought that he wouldn't see him as often anymore, maybe it was the first time they spend some time together. It's kind of like breaking up with someone, there is never a right moment to do it
