That's totally false. You must have been really young, or stoned out of your mind when he first came out. He had two records in the clubs, multiple joints on mixtapes and he was really awkward and swaggerless back then. So he was going to have his moment regardless, his music was making waves even when he was presenting himself to the public in the most boring way.
I think the better angle is "He wouldn't still be around today if not for social media". But you can say that about a lot of folks. And he doesn't really need media outlets like Ebro's show or The Breakfast Club to keep his name buzzing, if that's what you're implying.
