Your tip is anonymous. That is, they get your information but you won't get summoned to court to testify or your information isn't entered into the case. The police take your tip and work off of that.

For example, there's a warrant arrest for a suspect, John Doe. He also goes by the name of "White Chocolate Love". He looks like <race> and is approximately <height> and <weight> and has <hair color> and <facial features> and has a <tattoo, piercing, other unique feature>. You call in and say I know that guy, he's staying at <street number and address>.
So, what the police do is they stake out the address undercover and see if they see the suspect, to verify the tip. Why? Because the tip could be false. False tip, no reward.

But Lets Say My Tip Is Anonymous

And I Give The Police Info That Turns Out To Be False That Could Of Possibly Effected Their Time To Be Spent In A More Effective Manner. Essentially Wasting Their Time And Disrupting Their Investigation

Now Cant They Can Come After Me For Giving False Or Misleading Information?

If So How Is That Anonymous?

If The Police Were Hot On My Ass I'd Call And Give An Anonymous Tip hat Would Throw hem The Hell Off, And They Wont Even Trace The Call Or Look Into Who It Was Calling?

Also, My Point Was Lets Say The Tip Is Legit, You Gotta Go Pick Up That Money, Or Have It Sent To You, Either Way They're Gonna Know Who That Tip Came From

Well, a person can leave a totally anonymous tip. In the case where there was a reward, the person won't get it since he or she didn't choose to leave their identification and contact information.

There are investigators who will look into an anonymous tip. It's accepted as an anonymous tip, not the truth.

All these scenarios you are talking about, police already knows there's a possibility of 1. receiving a false tip, 2. person giving the tip saw a person who resembled the suspect but wasn't the suspect (mistaken identity), 3. received a valid tip but the suspect escaped town.

Okay, the police will not call up the tipster "Hey dude, show up at the jail. We got your money," and then hand the check into his hands while the arrested suspect gets to watch the hand off from behind the visitation room window. :why:
They've been in the crime investigation business for years. They are not that stupid.

I watched on the news one night how those tip lines/Crime Stoppers works. You call the hotline, give them the info, and they give you a number. If your tip is good, they somehow contact you (the only part they didn't make clear) meet at a location of the tipster's choosing. Someone meets them with the money and they don't get any info about them. Just hand them an envelop with cash and they are on their way. At least that's how S. Florida does theirs.
