So far as 1986 goes I'm not sure what series you were watching. (H)Akeem was just in his 2nd year and was far less offensively talented than he would be in his prime, and Boston still guarded him by sending 2-3 guys at him every time he got anywhere near the basket. Houston couldn't punish him for that because they had literally zero shooters out there and crappy off-ball movement. Sampson was decent but not a great scorer - Jeff Ruland who I just posted above actually had far better scoring numbers from the same position in the exact same era and he had zero skill or athleticism.

Here's the game tape for Game 6. Watch how they defend. Boston is completely reliant on the fact that no one is going to be penetrating and breaking down the defense, and that they'll be able to take their time to double Hakeem and take their time getting back because he ain't gonna abuse them quickly and no one else on the squad will punish them for committing.
