Posting from a so called 3rd world country. Money is hard to find but once you get it, there's no better place. Ask the white expatriates in Africa what's the deal, why can't they leave. I hear you people in the "1st world" have all the resources but still live like you're in prison. Cold war politics really helped shape the image of the rest of the world, since that was basically the "crack era" of our countries. Coups, civil wars, famine, post colonial politics. Much of that has subsided.

I feel like this builds character and offers a much wider spectrum of perspective than one would get growing up solely in a developed country. Not taking away from the struggles of the less fortunate in developed countries... it's just a different game altogether.
And no, travelling and experiencing it isn't the same. You can always call it quits and go back to your Amazon Prime same day shipping whenever you like, but people have to live like this for their entire lives. Still, to them it's just a normal life. However, to those of you who think you would not be able to survive, you'd be fine. The reduction in quality of life would be miserable at first, but you'd adjust if needed.. we've lived through much harsher conditions as a species.
It's fascinating how the human acclimates to varying levels of quality of life across the planet. Each with their own set of hardships and struggles. Yet, some still mange to find a happiness at each level.
