Great point.
When I was a kid, caught flack for rooting for the Celtics. The old timers used to be the only ones who gave me a pass.
Later in life, I realized it was because of what Bill Russell meant.
Was discussing Boston with another member recently. That city, and by extension that state has a terrible reputation in terms of Northern areas. Yet, the very first elected Black Senator, and the second of only two elected Black governors in history were in Massachusetts.
Growing up my dad liked the lakers and celtics due to magic and bird (plus kareem, west, wilt and russell from when he was young). As a child I remember him saying how historical the celtics were due to them being the first to hirer a black head coach. Plus how they were the first team to put more than 3 black players on the court at the same time.
See back in the 50s and early 60s unwritten rule was at most 3 black players on the court at home and 2 black players on the court on the road (or something like that). Because Red had so much pull with the team he could go by his own rules. I believe the celtics were also the first to have 5 black players on the court all at once.
My dad even hipped me to that it was Tommy Heinsohn who told Red to hire Russell as the head coach. Tommy turned down the job and told Red why don't you just hire Russell and let him be player coach.
One more thing. I remember as a kid watching the lakers vs bulls finals in 91. My dad and I were watching the game and he made a comment like. "Well folks swear up and down the lakers ain't a racist team and the celtics were. But the lakers ain't never had one black head coach. While the celtics had two and even let KC Jones take over that bird team and win two championships with them. That shyt would have never went down in LA."
Pops use to spit that real shyt when I use to watch sports with him as a kid...
Overall my dad respected the history of the celtics and raiders due to their history of being some of the first at giving black players (raiders with HBCUs) and black coaches and scouts (raiders with scouts) opportunities when other teams wouldn't.
