The East Coast "sound" can't really be defined by anyone because the East hasn't really used it. It's a dated sound. Why does every NY song need to sound like "DWYCK" in order for it to be a NY style song? That old school NY sound doesn't fit what people in NY listen to or what our tastes are. You're not gonna find nikkas in 20 degree weather rockin Champion hoodies rubbing up against each other for body heat with baseball bats and 2 x 4's near an abandoned building bobbing their heads to boom bap. We're past this. We'd rather be going ham in the club listening to some faster paced MMG sounding shyt, and boom bap in 2012 just doesn't fit the atmosphere that everyone wants around them.

Exactly, thats what alot of people who arent from NY simply dont understand. All that Mobb Deep, M.O.P, Bootcamp click, premo shyt is done. nikkas in NY aint trying to hear all dat. We rather jus roll up a jay kick back and fukk with a breezy. All that agressive content does not match the atmosphere of NY anymore. Guilani done cleaned up the city. The youth of NY aint even sell drugs or gang banging like that. They more into getting money, playing nba2k, fukking bytches and chilling on facebook and Twitter shyt.

We jus need a new sound to represent all of that. NY is more artsy and laid back and cool now. Thats why I feel Harry Fraud is doing a excellent job with his beats. New York nikkas more on that Jazzy Wavy shyt rather than being a hardened thug.


Max B was the last true NY artist to almost capture the exact feeling of NY.

It's funny that you say that. I'm a huge Joey fan, cyphered with those cats outside their inaugural show in BK.... I was bumping '99 on the A train today for the first time in 2 months and I realized how dope his shyt really is - especially if you're from NYC. The track Righteous Minds, and I just realized this today, talks about a girl getting an abortion and talks about the clinic on Austin St. I never caught the line before but I was like :O. I know where that is! He shouts out the Regents tests we all have to take. Anyway all that aside, he's a dope lyricist. Witty as fukk, great references, intelligent ways of saying things - but he needs to learn to ride the beat a little better in some cases. Sometimes he tries to fit too many words into a bar and it sounds off. Otherwise though, the TS is gonna look real dumb when his debut is critically acclaimed and dope.

From 50 to Maino, to Diddy to Jay. I guess everyone else agreeing with me are frustrated rappers and A&Rs too huh

i wouldnt say he sucks, but his "bring boom bap hip hop" gimmick is not going to work for him well.

I've been wondering about that. There's obviously a market for it, but he could restrict his growth if he keeps sticking to NY boom bap, jazz loops, etc. We'll see. If he ever got signed I'd imagine he could make some noise with something retro sounding like this
