:russ: if that’s not an I Need Love rip off then I don’t know what is. It’s been a loooong time since I’ve listened to any Vanilla Ice songs. I had the tape when I was maybe 10. But I thought he tried to be a G and it came out that his whole back story was fake. Then he had ghostwriting problems and overall was seen as a biter and/or wack to the culture because of the way he was pushed in the mainstream.

Yeah see I remember the Arsenio shyt but not the specifics of how he got exposed. I would've been in 8th grade.

I just remember there was word of it in....I wanna say Word Up! or some shyt. Where Luke was like :dahell: because he had no idea what Vanilla Ice was talking about.

After that it was pretty much a wrap.

It's funny you mention Drake because J. Prince said he was actively trying to sign Vanilla Ice back then.

I thought J. Prince was a clown since that interview. Because if Vanilla Ice had the backing of Prince and Rap-A-Lot....it would've given an official stamp to sucker shyt damn near at the inception of hip-hop. Then later it came out that J. Prince don't even listen to rap and only sees it as a way to make money....soured me to a lot of Rap-A-Lot related history.

Fred.
If L'il J actually signed Vanilla Ice, it would have been one of the biggest L's in hip hop history.

I'm still shaking my head at that thought.

And it's funny that you mentioned the Arsenio interview, folks were more mad at Arsenio for exposing Vanilla Ice than being mad at Vanilla Ice for perpetrating a fraud.

This goof-ass "he wasn't that bad" narrative stops on page 5... let's just go in:

Tuck your cape in, breh. He is still better than
RzwYdAs.png
and you know it.
He wasnt..dude was legit a great dancer but he faked the funk in the wrong era and paid the price
Exactly. If
RzwYdAs.png
is running hip hop today, I don’t see why dude couldn’t.

NYC black coffee tough guys aka the Stoozy Boys
Some of the biggest rap and rock acts, have been corny dudes, wearing jerri curls, dresses, earrings, pink clothing, etc....

Pretending to be a crip, blood, and or pimp, is still cringey. So its not about that..least we forget about the naked Pac photo he took in the tub.

Vanilla Ice ,was a one hit wonder, the likes of Sir-Mix-A lot. Race has nothing to do with it, plenty people have been trash.

A key piece of info missing from this thread (@DANJ! touched on it briefly) is Vanilla Ice lied about his back ground and got busted. By Luke from 2 Live Crew, if I remember correctly. Because he claimed to be from the hood in Miami when he was actually from Texas.

After that it was a wrap. Then on top of that his album was trash.

Prior to that people liked him about as much as any "dance/rap" artist back then, like Kid N Play, Heavy D, Hammer, etc. Which was well liked but nobody was putting those guys alongside the "real" rappers.

Fred.
Nah dont say that about heavy D...ain't too many cats that can say they rapped on prime Janet and mike albums and did songs with pac, biggie, pun, and g rap etc. ..heav needs more respect on his name

Saying he was "dance rap" is not a slight in the least but nobody was putting him alongside, let's say D.O.C. or Cube for example. Nobody I knew, at least.

I honestly don't remember how that interview was received, aside from people thought it was funny that Arsenio was shytting on Vanilla Ice to his face.

But then again, I was in 8th grade so it's possible other age groups took that interview completely differently.

he had good delivery and iconic stolen look

but he was never going to last regardless because he wasnt actually down with black shyt
yall clown eminem but he can actually naturally be around black people

vanilla ice was more jockish white dude
he wasnt gonna make it and hasnt in that medium because nikkas would ultimately get mad and test him for it

he's more "stitches" than "alchemist"
his demeanor and make up wont let him just chill and be with the culture, some shyt was bound to happen.
as much as people clown eminem on here, he's always been very natural and can easily blend in with black people
that's why I brought up Alchemist, he is another one of those white dudes who is just chilling, very aware and go with the flow type dudes.
white people like to try to live up to black impressions of them and it never works out, people want you to be yourself and be chilling.
That's why Jason Williams got respect, he's not impressive, he's just doing what he does in a black setting. He would be acting and doing that regardless of where he was.
