His come-up buzz was most similar (to use a semi-recent comparison) to jay elect's post-Exhibit C.... he was legit dope during that time...I disagree with the premise of the OP just off the strength that no retrospect is needed... he wasn't seen in a certain light or even really acknowledged at all except by certain subsets of the underground after the debut album flopped...to say he's wack in retrospect seems to shortchange how dope he was when he actually mattered .. all things being considered I think a "in retrospect, canibus was dope" is more apropos

Canibus from 97 to 2011 was top tier strictly off bars.
He still is nice but you can tell he's going through shyt. His pops passed like last year I think. You may not agree with his subject matter but don't deny his contribution..BIS IS A BEAST!

how can u not feel those multis and imagery?
the late 90s early 2000's Bis' capitalized off the nerdy/underground message board hype that was prevalent during those days. the using big words that dont make sense makes you a dope lyricist type shyt.. remember the Del's, the Eyedea's, the MC Nuclear etc.
People were so bent on going anti-commercial, since the Nelly's, Ja Rule's, Luda's etc were dominating that they went to the 'Alt-Left' of hip hop. Every message board was filled with cac's debating which nerdy rapper used more multi-syllable scientific words.
1996-1997 Canibus was kinda dope, but he morphed into a nerdy, try-hard nikka after that.
now that I got older and can use a dictionary, i can do the same stuff he was doing.
Basically,Canibus was a product of nikkas not having a vast vocabulary yet
I always could express myself with verbal gymnastics so he was always kinda wack to me
...you know he can rhyme,but he really never did much for me....my least favorite member of the horseman,nikka never gave me the 
feeling while listening to em....proof Canibus aint shyt is the fact we see nikkas in youtube comments who can do that same lyrical style as Canibus....its easier to do Canibus than to do somebody people would consider not as complex like a Jeezy

you not saying nothing new... matter of fact, after his first album dropped, pretty much everyone stopped listening cause it was sub par compared to his appearances on tapes... then he dropped the second in 2000 and got a few fans back but nobody cared by then

All very good albums, has other dope projects too, last 1 was nice.
I think of people just cling to a perfection of what's a narrative rather than actually judging based off the music and work.

didn't understand song structure; chorus concept like I like I honor u a little bit
but he had one mode of rapping ;just pissed off and unlike em
He didn't have a producer or a team that knew how to shape him
Black Rob has a good flow was creative, but his lines if you read them piece by piece are not that good, but Puff Daddy he knows how to make songs
So life story is a classic album
