This culture also doesn't only exist in tech w/ the Silicon Valley, medicine and law have similar mentalities: 70-80 weeks are common and expected in BigLaw, the same for physicians and surgeons. Venture Capital and investment banking are also guilty of extreme hours, and while the compensation for the aforementioned jobs is fairly high (in the low to mid six figures depending on field and seniority), it starts to become a bit inhumane and the definition of a rat-race. At least medicine involves and tangible, beneficial product.

bruh I completely understand and agree with what youre saying. But its one thing to have a well thought out business plan, goods/service, identifiable market etc and proceed with a business, its another to just write off 9-5s because you want to "hustle" and "do for self" because that can fukk you...you take a couple years off from the labour market to half ass pursue a business venture only for it to fail and youre back at square one with less money and youre older

Not to imply that's your circumstance, but this isn't as black and white as some would like it to seem

What difference does it make? The average black person has like a $5.00 net worth IIRC. Maybe more should start businesses :skip:

I noticed this as well, the term (which fell somewhere between colloquial urban and African-American Vernacular English usage) has jumped from implying illegal or alternative activities to literally anything involving making money. Uber uses it as a part of their ad campaign, and they are quite possibly one of the Whitest companies of all time.

America will never be third-world status, large-scale corporations employing huge chunks of the population doesn't mean resources are lost or infrastructure will fail, it just means there is less competition.

Will America turn into some complete backwater country? Probably not. Will it become a situation where there is pretty much only the rich and the poor and the middle class has disappeared? That's happening NOW. If current projections keep going, the average american WILL be poor quite soon. Salaries aren't rising but the price of everything else is shooting through the roof. Companies have been earning historic profits and yet the average American is finding it hard to make it. Prices will continue to rise. Compensation won't. You let that current trend continue, and it's poverty for the average America. A lot of people earn 10 to 15 dollars an hour, and that's before taking taxes out. A 3 chicken strip combo from popeyes is nearly $10. Entrepreneurship is a risk, but its even more riskier to depend on corporations who are constantly looking to lower compensation paid to employees while raising the prices they sell to consumers. If you're not making some sort of entrepreneurial moves, then you're putting your future at risk. I'm not saying quit your job and start a business. I am saying make connects with people and try to put some product for sale on the side, whether it be art, or whatever, while you work your job, and if something takes off, then you can focus on that.

I can't access the article OP cause I'm over my limit (already).

With that said, I've worked at one of the big 4 firms, and I work at a fortune 500 now. I don't know anyone who works a 9-5 that expects to be promoted.
