In the entire 40 year history of New York hip-hop, is JAY-Z the overall king?

Hilarious Thread, Jay ain't the King, he gets dominated in every category

Influence: Run DMC, Melle Mel, Rakim
Complex Lyrics: Big L, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, Nas
Longevity: Ll Cool J, Nas
Punchlines: Biggie, JadaKiss, Big L
Charisma: Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick
Rocking the crowd: Doug E Fresh, KRS One

The only category he dominates is... umm... fame? :yeshrug:
Call me crazy, but I'm not sure that's an important aspect of being an MC :bryan:

They're going to be mad at you:wow:

Out of 40 years this guy has been at or near the top for 17. Anyone else even come close?

The hottest MC is the one who wins over the people point blank period and no other MC has won over more people than hov. No disrespect to those pioneers in the 80's and early 90's but their music didn't really have that long a lifespan. Lotta them shyts died when the era did. If you listen to the radio you're probly gonna hear old school wu-tang, snoop, biggie, pac, redman, nas... shyt from like that 93-95 timespan before you hear shyt from like run dmc, rakim, kane, etc. etc. Again NOT tryna disrespect but it's the truth. Meanwhile you're gonna still be hearin jay's catelogue like 10-20 years from now. Guy got nothin but classic joints for days and days.

In my opinion it's between Jay-Z, Nas and LL Cool J.

But I think you got to give Jay the edge in terms of longevity and consistency, to still been going platinum 15 years after Hard Knock Life dropped is remarkable.

Jay has been the soundtrack to my fun memories for almost 17 years. NO other artist in HIP HOP can claim anything close.

So, Jay and maybe Nas is a close 2 just off respect and longevity. But even Nas knows his music is not "popular music". With a few exceptions, there are no Nas songs you throw on at parties, or play when you're around females, or out Kicking it drinking socializing etc. When I was 17 I remember riding in my first car 5 deep blasting vol 1. Now I'm 33, and was riding around with my kids listening to songs from Magna Carter on the radio.

and Big was the #1 at one time, but even as an 80's baby who grew up in the 90's I think people need to let go of BIG's sack at this point. He had an INCREDIBLE 3 year run, but seriously how are so many people still stuck in 1996 that they can't admit there are multiple artists with better/deeper catalogs at this point. It's been 16 years since he recorded a song, he only had 2 albums (classic yes) but only 2, come on fam ...
