:skip: so you're suggesting mike tyson instantly became this world famous global icon cuz he won the title. So I guess buster douglas was bigger than bo jackson in 1990 according to your logic :snoop:

:comeon:@ the bolded that's like comparing a player of derrick rose stature to kobe or lebrons. They've BEEN established for years terrible way to try to make a point

Bruh we'll have to agree to disagree and I was a kid back then
Son....boxing was SO much bigger than NBA basketball back then. Boxing was shown on national tv weekly. Tyson was popular even BEFORE he won the title because people watched him come up and tear through the HW division with a style that was exciting and ferocious. He was the most sensational fighter since Ali. Jordan was sensational in his own field, but HW boxing meant so much more on a global scale than NBA basketball in that era

I saw this LIVE on ABC Wide World of Sports in 1986.

Dude had EVERYONES attention. Basketball wasn't nearly as big back then beyond the Lakers, Celtics, Magic, Bird and Dr. J.

Dude in here is LYING.

so all you can resort to now is jokes after admitting you really don't know shyt?

Dog....you are the biggest clown in here. Patrick Ewing was more known than MJ back then since big men were still kings in the league.

I'm with you in terms of picking Tyson over Jordan in this worldwide debate, but :wtf: @ the red

There is no way that is true...maybe you are joking (I am not reading 18+ pages of BS)

We've had the Mikan era, the Russell era, the Kareem era … now we'll have the Ewing era.

Pat O'Brien, quoting an unnamed NBA scouting director just before the 1985 NBA Draft lottery.[7]

Wing players beyond Dr. J didn't carry the NBA back in the day like that. Ewing came in off the backs of other big men. MJ dismantled that shyt....but Ewing was the bigger name coming out of Georgetown when he came out of college compared to MJ. Straight up.

Anyone going with Jordan doesn't remember or wasnt around to understand that being the heavyweight champion of the world back then was top of the food chain of manhood.

In countries that don't even watch basketball they understood what the heavyweight champion of the WORLD meant especially since boxing was always the more global sport.

Mike Tyson was mos def more popular
So before you threw me off with the Patrick Ewing drop, here is what I remember lol

When Mike Tyson lost my whole family was distraught. My dad legit cried when dude lost, I remember my whole family not being able to believe it and I am sure we still have the VHS tape that one of my uncles had recorded.

Family is from DR and they didn't start coming here until the late 80's to early 90's and knew where to find Tyson. He was HUGE

People knew of Michael Jordan obviously, but he didn't have that kind of impact that Tyson had from what I remember. In fact, I have been saying that Tyson's short run of dominance ruined the HW division...because people expected the next great to be just like him and just knocking dudes out left and right. Lennox Lewis had a great career and didn't get anywhere near the kind of attention Tyson got because of his fighting style

If we are talking about straight out in the mid to late 80's, yeah I am with you. It appears we have 2 different arguments in this thread now.
