If we are talking about straight out in the mid to late 80's, yeah I am with you. It appears we have 2 different arguments in this thread now.
No doubt.

MJ changed the NBA landscape and made the focus about wing play.

Wing players beyond Dr. J didn't carry the NBA back in the day like that. Ewing came in off the backs of other big men. MJ dismantled that shyt....but Ewing was the bigger name coming out of Georgetown when he came out of college compared to MJ. Straight up.

I know you from nyc and all, but no, Ewing and Gooden were not more popular than Jordan in 86 outside of nyc and Gooden was my fav player watched every game of the Series.

If we're debating popularity, as in "liked" yeah it would be Jordan because he had a bland Tiger Woods persona and sold shoes. Tyson at his peak was more "famous" though, in terms of facial and name recognition. Of course massive numbers of people hated him, but everyone was fascinated by him.

Just the fact we're debating this topic given the fact Tyson was only on top for about 3 years tells you how absolutely MASSIVE he was at his peak. There was no athlete in the 1980s more famous and recognizable than Tyson.

Of course looking back Jordan had a long illustrious career that enabled him to build a legacy Tyson could never have. But peak for peak no one resonated like Tyson with the exception of Ali.

Ali vs Jordan would be a more appropriate debate because Ali is a guy who fulfilled his potential. And in terms of American and worldwide fame, peak for peak Jordan doesn't come close. Of course the basketball fans will even try and debate that:mindblown:

In France, Jordan by lightyears.
Tyson was known, but Jordan was and still is an icon.

Some of you americans really have no clue about the world. Tyson more popular than Jordan :rudy:

Who ?

Edit : looked at wikipedia, unfortunately baseball and american football are really really minor here. There is an audience since the 2000's but it's still very small so when talking about a dude whose prime was in the 90's...

He's one of the most athletically gifted athletes this country has ever seen.

But you got nostalgic old heads in here trying to act like he had, at some point, reached same peaks in popularity that Jordan had reached...that's how biased these guys are.

My bad, didn't mean to disrespect.
It's just that out of the 4 big american sports (american football, baseball, hockey and basketball), only bball is really worldwide and that's thanks to Jordan and the NBA.

OP's question doesn't even make sense really. Obviously Tyson is known worldwide but popularity-wise ? Jordan is on another level. Jordan and the Bulls made the world love basketball. MJ appeared in vids with the other MJ, had movies, had sneakers to his name, made Nike what it is, made classic ads for mc donalds starring Larry Bird and George Eddy (known bball journalist here). Dude is an icon period.
