The only way you can somehow measure one's popularity over another in the sports industry is through economic impact. Marketing, in most cases, drives someone's popularity through commercials and other marketing efforts. Kids who are wearing Jordan shirts in Africa are more likely to know who Jordan is even though they don't know the sport. The kind of reasoning why Tyson is more popular argued in this thread fall into "romanticising" the significance of being the heavyweight champion of the world. There's no way to quantify that other than "I remember how badass Tyson was when I was a kid" type of shyt.

There are tons of articles written about Jordan's economic impact globally. I want to read about Tyson's impact on a global scale to take this seriously.
Dog...you have people who buy Jordans without even knowing who he is or watching him play.

As a young buck myself I can still say that those that say Mike Tyson was less popular than Michael Jordan are under 30. Especially the ones that say "and it aint even close"..that's just plain ignorant. If you really knew history you would know how big a deal heavyweight champion of the world was until the stars died out

I know this.. I had Jordan 2' and 3's. Still, Bo was just as popular if not more popular in '88, man. The Bulls still weren't the premiere team in the NBA yet. It was still all about the Lakers when people thought NBA.

We're talking about Jordan, not the Bulls. Bo's peak was probably 89 when he was an MLB all-star, Pro Bowler and the Bo Knows campaign started. Even then, that was the year Come Fly With Me dropped and sold 250,000 copies. Anecdotal experience alert, one of my first sports memories was going to see a Bulls pre-season in Buffalo that year. MJ was huge at the time. Jordan v. Bird dropped in 88.

nikkas outside the US could give a fukk less about some Air Jordans so throw that argument out the window. This thread reeks of Americans thinking the world revolves around them. Tyson >>>>>>>>>>>> Jordan in terms of global poularity no question. Jordan was someone people may of fukked with and tried to keep up on, but Tyson was that nikka you'd go hungry to catch that next fight paying for the ppv and staying up till 4am to watch 3 mins of the GOAT. More people outside the US know Tyson purely through Street Fighter and his WWE appearances than are actual avid NBA followers.

Exactly if nikkas don't know what shyt was like then they need to shut the fukk up, listen and learn.

Tyson bitin Holyfields ear got more worldwide recognition than anything Jordan has. I'm not tryna shyt on MJ but no-one is close to Tyson

Tyson got convicted of rape. He will never have merchandise mass marketed like that.

Even Robin Givens became one of the most famous chicks around for a time off the strength of Tyson. Their marriage was one of the biggest celebrity relationships ever. That train wreck got covered by magazines, paparazi and television all around the world. Wasn't no Asian people rushing Juanita in airports
